Fall Break

Mistakenly booked S home Wed night of October break (OOS). Do teachers often cancel classes that day? He of course has almost every class/lecture on Thursday…think OK for psych and folklore, but any feedback on K204 (Helmsley)…is at 4-5:15 on Thursday, would it be a likely cancel? Also, if one misses Bus T 175 (meets once a week) is it possible to attend another session?

I wouldn’t be so sure about psych/folklore. My folklore professor started taking 1/3 of a letter grade off the semester grade for every absence after the third lecture or first missed discussion. I don’t know about T-175, but the course it replaced (x-220), gave a big grade penalty for even the first absence.

To answer your question though, I doubt any of those classes would be cancelled the day before Fall break. Fall break practically goes unnoticed in Kelley since there are so few Friday classes anyway.

Also, your son should be fine as long as he plans from the beginning. Most professors with strict attendance policies don’t penalize the first absence.

Ugh. Any thoughts about Helmsley’s class? Thinking just skip that one.

I wouldn’t think anyone would cancel classes for “fall break” which really is just a random day off. Most classes don’t have a Friday class period. It really won’t affect class scheduling. He can skip April’s k204 class if he wishes but I know I made sure not to miss that class as several sections in the lab manuals were covered each class period. As for t-175, after most people skipped that class last fall, attendance became mandatory and showing up for class is now a portion of a student’s class grade.

Guitarist, is it possible to go to another one of April’s sections earlier in the day if necessary? Are they all the same? There IS a flight can switch him to would miss about a quarter of the class if he cannot.

Last spring when I was in her class, she had two classes that were basically back to back. The only issue I could see with that is that the two classes are not necessarily going to be working on the same material on the same day as one class may get work done more quickly/more slowly than the other. I would say, however, that attending the other class period would be better than missing completely. I would certainly suggest that he discuss it beforehand with April, and it should not be a problem (and for the record she is a fantastic professor who is very approachable and understanding).

Thanks so much! May have to just skip the break…do alot of people stay on campus at that time?

Some go home but plenty stay as well. It also seemed like most of those who went home were in state students, whereas most oos and international students just stayed around campus.

I am OOS and did not even realize there was a break…

Yankees- it really isn’t much of a break. It’s something new they started last year where you get one Friday off and they call it fall break.

We were planning on D staying on campus since she
OOS

Last year was the first that IU had a fall break. We booked a trip during that time frame without thinking about whether DS would want to come home. He was a freshman last year. We didn’t need to worry or feel guilty about him being alone on campus. He said very few people left for the long weekend. It was really just an extra day off. He wouldn’t have come home even if we were around.

Fall break is Friday and Monday off, correct?

Mama1317- last year it was just Friday. Haven’t checked yet for this year but assumed it would be the same.

Thank goodness for this thread, I had written the dates down wrong and booked a doctor appt for Monday (sigh) guess that gets changed to Thanksgiving!

They rarely change the 9 year calendar unless things like Labor Day or Fall Break get voted into the schedule

Since my dd has no classes on Friday this isn’t any more of a break than any other weekend.
