Fall color in DC/VA area?

I didn’t want to divert the other thread about color in New England. I amy be heading up to the DC and Richmond area to see some schools with D in the next few weeks. Do those areas get any color or do you need to be more towards the mountains? I might consider flying in somewhere a little more west then driving over if I thought it would be really pretty. I am from MA and now live in FL so I really miss the fall colors!

Seconding this thread. I’m heading to the Blue Ridge Parkway/Roanoke/Asheville area next week. To anyone in that area, how are the fall colors? Did the two hurricanes that slashed through the area strip the leaves off the trees?

So far there’s no color at all, but that’s not unusual. In a few weeks we should start to see some color. We’re heading up to see our son in Ithaca, NY in early November; I hope it’s looking good then.

You can also check for fall foliage color reports and maps on-line

I live in the western part of Virginia near Shenandoah National Park. Currently we’re not seeing a lot of color but that should start to change quickly with cooler temps and drier weather. As @gouf78 mentioned, there are online resources which are helpful!

I’ve been looking at some area webcams and there aren’t many trees in color so far.

Central PA resident here who works in the Baltimore/DC area. Five days ago, it was 80 degrees. Temps dropped just after that. Looking out my office window, all I see are green leaves that are still on the trees. Same thing at home.

I think we’re running a bit late on the fall foliage this year. Should start to switch over soon though.

Thanks - sounds like we might get lucky if we wait a few weeks. The schools have Nov. 6th off so I was thinking we could see schools the 5th & 6th and she would only have to miss 1 day of school.

I did look online but they show the whole state, I didn’t know if places closer to the coast would be OK or if I would have to go inland. I guess I should have realized it will be everywhere - I didn’t live near the Berkshires and of course we still got color!

Looks like that would be good timing for peak color in most of the state! A few areas past peak but it will still be pretty.

SWVA resident and we’re starting to get Fall here slowly. Definitely within the next few weeks we should be good.

I must live near @InfiniteWaves as I concur with them. H and I were just remarking today at how late the leaves are this year. They’re usually all but gone by Election Day (and sometimes already in Oct) so we’ll see how it plays out, but so far, only an occasional tree or two has turned. A few others just turned brown and dropped their leaves. Most seem to be “winter deniers” and are still pretty much completely green.

Yeah, my S in Arlington VA said that all he sees/has seen around is mostly green. It’s been warm, so that’s likely a factor.

I drove through Pittsburgh and western PA on Friday and the leaves were still green. Ditto in NJ right now. We usually go to Shenandoah the third weekend of October and it’s 50/50 if the leaves are at peak.

I’m in suburban Maryland and I’m seeing a few tiny patches of color. I’m driving to Ohio on Friday and am hoping to see more color there. Ohio has lots of sugar maple tress that turn that brilliant red, but the DC area does not.

When I saw this I thought of this thread

That’s great for me - I think we are going first weekend of November. Just waiting to see if D21 wants to come with us before I book it!

Well, we are seeing yellows, oranges and reds plus some bare trees in Acadia and now Portland.

Actually there’s lots of color of you like green. The poplars next to our deck are usually all yellow by this time of year.
