Fall folliage

Looking for suggestions for fall leaf viewing for 2nd or 3rd week of October. The preference is for east coast.
Thank you

Southern Maine usually peaks around October 14 (I can remember that because it’s my sister’s birthday!). You would see some nice foliage here then. Into the third week, I would go further south - New Hampshire or Massachusetts.

There is a small national map if you scroll down.

Here’s my tip - If you are looking at an area that also has a large college avoid their homecoming/family weekend! Also, Columbus day is apparently peak leaf peeping weekend in upstate Vermont. It’s the only time we can visit our son and I had a heck of a time finding a room for under $150 a night and ended up booking at a bed and breakfast 30 minutes from where we wanted to be. The northern tier of PA is beautiful.

Fall foliage can be VERY weather dependent. For example, while the peak in some areas is Columbus Day weekend, if there is significant wind and rain just before that…the leaves will all be on the ground.

I am taking a vacation in Maine for the first two weeks in October. I will be able to travel all over the state - during that time, does anyone have recommendations of where to go for the best foliage?

In Maine? I think you’d pretty much have to stay in a dark room to avoid fall foliage! Really, trees and mountains, a beautiful coastline, what more could one ask for? Here are some fun events in Maine in Sept. and October: [October Festivals in Maine](http://www.maine.info/events/festivals/october.php)

^^^Thanks for the link! Looks great!

Fryeburg Fair runs to 10/6, though that’s really close to the NH border.

I think one of if not the prettiest area is actually the Jackson area, which is near both Maine and the huge outlets at North Conway. There’s a really good old time scenic railroad in N. Conway. And it’s close to Bethel, which I think is one of the prettiest parts of Maine -and home to Sunday River so there’s stuff to do.
