@epicninja49 I can answer your question about minors. Technically, right now, there aren’t official minors at UT Austin. Some degrees require a minor, like Liberal Arts, actually one Liberal Arts require a 12 hour minor.
However, many degrees can have a minor built in. Business, Communication, etc. have the option to declare a minor. However, they’re unofficial because it will never be on your record. It’s not what they call “transcript-recognized.” That’s where certificates come in. You can’t “minor” in Computer Science, but you can do the 18 hour certificate for non-majors. That WILL show up on your transcript.
So, mostly semantics. What you are referring to is the BSA degree in CNS. This is fairly new and designed to be interdisciplinary. So, the pre-med students who want to dabble in Business or the Nutrition major who wants to study communication as well can do so. They trade about 15-30 hours of science courses for a required minor or certificate. To do a minor, you just have to take 15 hours in one subject. So 5 courses. You can also do a certificate instead, so you could do the non-major CS certificate or do a Pre-Health certificate. But if you want to do just a minor in 15 hours, you have to do something interdisciplinary, so no hard sciences. That’s for the BSA though.
Anyone can do a concentration in something as long as you have access to the courses, which varies by department. You can always highlight on your resume you took 15 hours of extra math or writing courses, etc. Most students look in the Liberal Arts, Communication, Fine Arts, Information Studies or some Natural Sciences for unrestricted courses. That’s where you’ll find courses possibly open to anyone.
All that said, next year everything is changing! There will be transcript-recognized minors, but for now that’s all we know. We don’t know how/when/which courses mean what, just that minors WILL eventually have an option to be official. But hopefully understanding what it means now will help explain the minor question.
For those of you interested in CAP. Check out the "To All My Fellow 2019 Cap Applicants* CAP students will be posting their experience/grades there and you can ask them for more info.
Hi,
I called the housing office and it appears that UT is only giving out supplemental contracts at this time. A person who I wanted to room with got her permanent contract and I have not. I will most likely get supplemental, but if she makes her housing contingent on me where she requests me and selects that she would rather have her roommate preference over her housing is it still possible for me to room with her? is there any way I can still room with her and get her housing since she already has a contract? also, how likely is it that I get offered a permanent housing contract in the summer if I get supplemental for now?
@L0nghorn2020 It will go by the earliest application date, so if she did her housing application before you and then put you down for her roommate and if she already got a housing contract then you shouldn’t be in supplemental housing.
@L0nghorn2020 hmmm not sure about that one, is that a question on the contract? I do know that getting into a dorm goes by the application date, when putting down a roommate they will go by the student that put their application in the earliest, she might not get her top choice but it won’t be supplemental housing unless she did it late as well. Sorry I couldn’t answer that one, hopefully someone else might know.
If you call housing on Tuesday I’m sure they can tell you. They are super helpful. My guess is that is you only are “in line” for supplemental that even if she preferences you, someone who is “in line” for a regular room would get the spot over you. No clue if that’s right, but I feel like I’ve heard that. Good luck!
Not sure if she should do that though. The thing is I did call housing and they said they are only offering supplemental. I’m sure you read that in my post, but since they said that I’m not sure that they will offer me a permanent housing contract even if she requested me
I would say it’s up to her and it depends if she’s really set on where she wants to live. It’s really a risk on her part. I think there would be no guarantee she would get you. That said, if you land in supplemental and she lands somewhere else you could try to move for spring semester?? A lot opens up. Again this is just my opinion - not hard and set facts!
I think you should maybe ask these specific questions by calling DHFS. I know you called to see about your housing and they said only supplemental rn but maybe you should ask them these too!
for those wondering when you will know about housing. NOTE: if you put your first preference by at least mid september you will be GUARANTEED to get your first choice. anything to november, i would say you have a good chance of getting your first choice. anything past december, the chance of you getting your first choice is slim. also everyones contracts will be released by the end of july.
You can change your housing preferences until July 1. The date of original housing application is what UT uses to make hall and room assignments. I don’t think UT Housing guarantees anything about room assignments. Here’s what is on their website:
How can I submit my housing preferences?
You can submit your housing preferences once you have submitted your housing contract and satisfied the $300 housing advance payment. You are able to submit preferences for your residence hall, bathroom type, roommate(s) and special living communities. You have until July 1 to complete your preferences, and you may change them as many times as you want up until that date. When assigning you to your official space, we will look at your preferences in housing application date order.

Think I found what I needed for those courses. Could you possibly recommend a series of Science and Technology Courses that I could use to fulfill the first part of the 6 hour requirement. I am an Econ major, so would prefer not to take the Chemistry, Physics route. Possibly Geology or Astronomy? Any teacher recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!
Hi, I appealed to be considered as a transfer applicant on June 6, and my appeal was accepted. I have over 30 hours of college credit. I have over 500 hours of community/school service. I also wrote two amazing essays. My final rank in high school was 23/296, and my GPA was 97.2. My college GPA is also 3.56. I originally applied at a freshman applicant, and I was denied. I am now applying as a transfer student to be accepted into the Government program, and my second choice is undeclared. Do y’all know when I might hear something back or if I have a good chance ?
