Fall Schedule for Civil Engineer?

Right now I have Chem 1A, Math 2B (both repeat courses to me since I took AP Chem and Calc BC), EECS 10, and Writing 39B. The thing is, I want to do study abroad in Japan, and the only program available is immersion so I’ll need to learn the language. Should I try to squeeze Japanese 1A into there or will it be overkill? Personally I’m not worried about Chem, Math, or EECS since I catch on very quickly when it comes to tech stuff (EECS 10 is programming right?) and the other two will just consume time hw-wise. If anyone’s taken 39B, can you tell me how stressful/large the workload is? It’d really help me to decide whether or not to try to take Japanese.

ok Dont take a 5th class, youll be asking alot of people requesting to take more than 4 classes. From what ive heard, 39B is the toughest writing classes out of the 39 series. 39c is all research, 39b is reading analytical. I took a summer program for incoming freshmans and from what i heard from other engineer majors is the freshman avg gpa is 2.6. Dont be hasty taking a language class. Remember you need a social life as well. Besides theres a 5wk travel-study in the summer UCs offers to students and Japan is offering classes. You can even take a language course during study abroad. I dont think UCI heard immersion but thers EAP

Yeah, I’m talking about EAP for a year in Japan. I guess that’s one vote for 39b being hard. I heard 39C was pretty bad at my SPOP because of all the research (very time-consuming from what I’ve experienced in high school) and I’m going to try to get a B in 39B so I can take an easier class instead of that. Maybe I should hold off on the lang class and try the 5week program before making any decisions?

I’m in the same boat as you (thinking about Civil Engineering, want to study abroad in Taiwan). I was thinking about taking Chinese my first year but I don’t really think I will have room. So I might just wait on it…

why are you taking math 2b if u already took calc bc

^I’m assuming he got a 3. In which case he would be placed into 2B.

If he got a 3, he wouldnt be able to handle 5 classes. Keep 4 classes, and concentrate on acing your classes. Also, its silly to take 5 classes, as your first quarter should be dedicated to doing well, getting into the college rhythm, and meeting new people.

Actually 39C is a lot harder than 39B

I have to agree, Writing 39C is harder than Writing 39B purely because you are forced to do some research over limited topics. At least in Writing 39B, you can at least let your creativity fly without getting it smacked down by facts, studies, citations, and analysis on thesis you will most likely have no interest in…unless you’re a biology major.

I thought 39B was harder than 39C… much easier to write a research paper with a focused topic then pull random gibberish out of thin air for 39B. Writing was somewhat time consuming but not too bad. Chem and Calc probably won’t be time consuming in terms of HW… lot less busy work in College compared to HS. You will probably have 1 assignment a week a chem.
