How do colleges view familial relationships during the college application process? What do they look for? What do they not look for?

A lot of colleges ask the question on their application about relatives who have attended the college. How they take that into account varies – generally your parents and/or grandparents make you a legacy. Being a legacy certainly does not get you admission, but it at least earns your application a good look. But colleges do ask about other relationships, not sure how they use those others. You probably only want to list relatives who were in good standing with the college. :)
