Fantasy Football as an EC?

Hi, I am part of a fantasy football league. As a prospective CS major, I used some basic CS principles and applied them to a drafting strategy for fantasy football. As an Asian male, I want to prove I apply my knowledge in a unique way. I don’t just learn languages for the sake of learning them, but for the application of them.

Would it be advisable to say “Fantasy Football Data Analysis” or something like that as an EC? I spend time on FF, and I like it. Additionally, I won 1st last year. Would it be ok to put this as an EC and the 1st place as an award as part of my EC?

It will likely be my 8-9th EC on the Common App.

Thanks

As long as playing fantasy football is nowhere near the best EC you have and it isn’t coupled with other mediocre ECs, then it’s sort of okay. In my honest opinion, it just looks like a purely fluff EC. “FF Data Analysis” sounds to me like you checked out some stats and chose players off of that which frankly isn’t going to impress adcoms. If you’re using this to seem unique, many, many high schoolers play fantasy football and I doubt being Asian and doing it makes it any different.

ok lol, just asking @Syrxis @happy1 I thought it was interesting and I wasn’t doing it to impress anyone, just to differentiate myself. But if you think it will portray me in a bad light, then I will not include it

I agree it’s a bit weak as an EC, but I think it’s a good thing to keep in your back pocket for interviews or short answer essays should it be relevant, if you want to show off how you apply your skills to personal interests, talk about your hobbies, or just as an anecdote to give your application a bit of personal flavor.

good advice, thanks @Srabookworm

I keep thinking of that episode of The League where Rusman forces Kevin into a trade in order to agree to a plea deal for Kevin’s client. Perhaps one of the college reviewers will need fantasy help and you can…
Never mind that, not a great idea.

ha, I remember that episode, had that in mind when making this post @rwmannesq

I wouldn’t mention it at all, the last thing you want is for colleges to think you’ll be watching football on Sundays, Monday and Thursday nights and not engaging with the community or worse blowing off class.

Actually, if you are nationally ranked as a successful “manager” of a fantasy football league, it would probably stand out to an admissions officer. Having a life outside of school is always a good thing, as long as the activity you pursue is something you are really serious about, do very well and have pursued over a long period of time.

Try making the EC centered more around data analytics and learning a programming language. Then you can talk about applying it to various things to make your own programs (such as, in this case, FF).

Depending on who reads your application, I feel like they would either appreciate the data analytics aspect of the fantasy football or dismiss the EC as ridiculous.

And if that’s the case - is it really worth the risk or the adcom looking at it as ridiculous?
