FAQ for USC Financial Aid

Hi alamemom, thanks for your help the last time. I had a lot of doubts and you answered them, thank you. But I do have another question. I think that I’m just going to send all my 42 by Fedex. Do you think that they will accept it? Also does the address of USC happens to be this?

University of Southern California
USC Financial Aid Office
University of Southern California
700 Childs Way
Los Angeles, CA 90089-0914
United States of America

Thank you so much

What should I do if my parents did not finish their tax returns? They wont be finished until about March 15. Should I upload just the W2 forms?
Sorry if this question was already answered.

Also, in the documents tab, it says that no forms are required. Where exactly did you guys go to upload the forms?

Thanks!

soul24rage - yes, that is the mailing address of the financial aid office. And yes, they will accept them - USC is very flexible about how you get documents to them. *And you probably don’t have to Fed Ex them, unless you think it will take more than a week or ten days by regular mail - do you have a less expensive priority mail option you could use?

snowboard129, did you try the “Document Library” tab behind the “My Documents” tab? If uploading doesn’t work you can FAX, scan and email, snail mail… any way that you get it there will work. If your parents haven’t finished their tax returns, send (upload, FAX, etc.) as soon as they have them done. It should not affect the total aid you receive, it just might mean your package is presented a bit after the others. In general, applicants who had everything in on time receive packages the first week of April, and those who submitted later tax documents, etc. get them later.

Some applicants cannot convince their parents to get the taxes done before April 15th, and when tax documents are submitted that late the package probably will not be ready for review before the May 1st commitment deadline. If that happens, applicants should request an extension of the commitment deadline in writing from schools (including USC) that they are still considering.

@alamemom, I am a transfer applicant so I guess it wont really affect when I get my aid package because I wont get my decision by June anyways.

Then submitting tax returns in mid-March will be no problem! Transfers usually get their packages within about two weeks after their decisions, and within about a week for those that get a SGR and receive their decisions in July (an excruciating though to have to wait until July, but at least the fin aid comes quicker!).

According to DS portal, Financial Aide has everything they need from us- FAFSA, CSS and DS’ 2010 Tax return. Is it strange that we were never asked for Parents’ 2010 Tax return?

^we were asked to enter certain line figures from our 2010 1040 form. I did so yesterday and then today we were prompted to upload the 1040 and complete a Parent’s Income and Expense Declaration. Maybe these steps are only required of some applicants?

I just tried faxing my parent’s corporate tax returns, and at one point a page got jammed. Do the previous 21 pages i faxed to them get to them? Or should i resend?

Do we lose aid if our papers are sent in later?

Hi snowboard!

Re-read my answer to you a few posts up in #683 - I addressed that question there!

Guys, literally listen to every word alamemom has to say regarding financial aid business. If it wasn’t for her I would not be at SC right now. Her wisdom is INVALUABLE!!

Awwwww  Thanks! You are one of my favorites from 2010 because you always laughed at my jokes (no one else seemed aware thet they were jokes… ).

How is your first year going, Malik - is USC turning out to be what you hoped it would?

So why do I keep hearing that USC is inflexible with FA deadlines and will only meet 100% need if you meet all deadlines? Sorry, I’m just really stressed about this now.

And I just found out that my parents’ tax returns will be ready today!

Just to be clear, is this all I need to do:
-Fax in or upload W2 and 2010 tax return
-Make FAFSA corrections online and fax printed out CSS corrections
-Fill out the parent tax information in document library

Am I missing anything?

Thanks for your help!

BTW, just so that everyone should know, the deadline is 9 pm pacific time, NOT 11:59.

snowboard, the INFLEXIBLE deadline I have been referring to in the last few days is not a USC deadline - it is the California Student Aid Commission’s deadline for Cal Grant, and that deadline - March 2nd for FAFSA and GPA verification - applies specifically to California resident applicants. If applicants miss that deadline, they will not receive Cal Grant (again, it is the California Student Aid Commission who will deny or grant the Cal Grant - not USC). I try to be very clear and insistant about the March 2nd deadline because there is nothing USC can do to help applicants with Cal Grant if they miss that deadline.

It looks as though you have everything taken care of - great job!

here is a little “words of wisdom”-type post I put on another thread and a mom said she found it helpful  , so I thought I would re-post here:

I haven’t posted too many questions but I also wanted to express my gratitude for alamemom! You are a fountain of knowledge and I am forever grateful.

@alamemom - USC exceeded my expectations. I’m not kidding when I say these past seven months have been the best months of my life. Great to see that you’re still around these boards, helping out worried high school seniors with apparently the same exact problems year after year, haha.

If one of my parents lost a job and my other parent cannot work for months due to surgery, what form should I send in to inform USC? Is it the “Appeal Concerning Expected Contribution” form?

Also, what documents should I attach to the form (i.e. is a letter explaining my situation sufficient or do I have to send in items such as a letter of termination and a doctor’s note) and when should I send these documents? Should I wait until my parent finds a job, should I wait until USC’s admittance decision, or should I act immediately?

It sounds like the “Appeal Concerning Expected Contribution” form most closely matches your situation (these forms are new - in the past, applicants just sent in letters).

Fill out the form, include a letter detailing the situation (try to be factual and brief - this isn’t the place to gush about how much you love USC - just explain the situation clearly), and also include documentaion of the job loss and inability to work because of surgery. Possible documents: layoff notice, copies of unemployment checks, doctor’s orders not to return to work, disability paperwork, etc.

In most cases, appeals are sent after the original package is received, but in your case it would seem sensible to send it now.

In standard financial aid calculations, current year unemployment was not considered - it was based only on the previous year’s financial information. Last year the federal government asked colleges and universities to voluntarily consider current year unemployment in financial aid calulations, and we saw some anecdotal evidence on this forum that USC was taking it into consideration. As the economy has not yet improved significantly, it may be that they will continue to do so this year.

Good luck!

Could someone please help me :(

My parents haven’t filed their personal 2010 Tax Return information yet, because they have to wait for the business taxes to finish filing. This will not be done until April.

USC wants the Tax Return information today, and I was wondering if I could just use the 2009 Tax Information on the online form?
