No, you cannot use the 2009 information. You just have to wait to submit the information until your parents get their taxes done. For more info, I’ll repost this from post #683:

If you submit the tax info on April 15th, your financial aid package will probably be ready to view sometime the first week of May.

is everybody required to submit their parents’ 2010 tax forms? cuz on my document management thing on usconnect, it says im not required to submit any documents even though i havent submitted any tax documents to usconnect. i have done the css profile and fafsa though. any help please?

The USConnect tax document system is new this year and seems to be causing a bit of confusion. My current assumption is that all financial aid applicants will be asked to submit tax returns - if anyone (such as BluFiascoStarr ) who does not have any indication on their USConnect that those documents are required calls in to inquire, please come back and post here to update us with current info. Thanks!

As of last week, my sons USConnect portal did not list ANY required, pending or submitted documents in the financial aid section. After reading through ALL of the posts on this thread, I decided to proactively begin submitting forms. I started with the Tax Return, Federal 2010 - Parents.

Within 24 hours that form was listed under the “received documents” section, and I suddenly had 4 or 5 “required documents” listed, including the FAFSA and CSS Profile (which I had completed in February). I called the Financial Aid office and they were able to link those required documents to my sons account through his SS# - which was not submitted when he filled out his application.

My thought is, since there was no link between FAFSA / CSS Profile and USC through my sons SS# - they were unaware that we were applying for any Financial Aid. I think I triggered the system into requiring documents by submitting that initial form.

The link is between the students USC ID and the FAFSA/CSS forms. They already received the forms, they just couldn’t reflect that through the portal, since the portal ID (USC ID) didn’t have the SSN tied to it. It doesn’t mean that they couldn’t process the forms - that’s done via the student SSN. They just couldn’t reflect it though the portal. That’s my take on it…

I think you are right, VHFather - they are processing away with no problem. The only problem appears to be that some financial aid applicants are unaware that they need to submit the tax returns because the request doesn’t show up on USConnect due to no link-up.

At this point, I believe all financial aid applicants ARE required to submit parent and student tax returns and W-2s.

*Note to support my belief that all FA applicants need to submit tax return copies: as a returning senior next year, my daughter has been asked for these documents - it would seem that if the requirement was being changed, it would be returning students who would not be required to submit the tax returns - we have submitted them three previous times. Applicants, I really do believe you will have to submit the copies to receive your financial aid package.

The good news is, it isn’t too late! Submit them as soon as you are able - and get the SSN link-up established so you can be assured they have been received.

Anybody else having difficulty with faxing documents? I cannot fax from home or school. I have checked the number and even had the school secretary try to fax my documents.

I called USC and a counselor told me to keep trying–I have been trying since two days ago. I am reluctant to upload documents because uploaded documents appear blurry; also, the financial aid counselor said that if the documents are blurry, I should fax them for safe measure.

If your CSS/Profile, FAFSA and tax returns were submitted by their deadlines, the packages generally appear at the end of the first week of April.

So wait we were supposed to send our parents 2010 tax returns after doing the css? But everytime i check my usc account it doesnt say im missing any documents?

Hi rice! Go back couple of pages and take a look at posts #676, 687, 703, 704, 707 and 708. Hopefully those will answer your question - good luck!

Please check with the financial aid office. I was there last week for Explore USC and my understanding is everyone has to enter their tax information on the website, but only some of us will be asked to submit copies of teh tax returns. They said this is a new system where they get the families to do the data entry saving weeks of time for Financial Aid staff. Again, please check with them to be sure. This is my understanding. We were one who was asked to upload our tax returns but that message came within 24 hours of completing the online form.

First of all, thank you, especially alamemom for all of the informative information in this thread. USC has asked that I send them k-1 statements as well as tax returns for a partnership my parents are a part of. However, I have just learned that they will not be ready until April. Should I wait until they are ready or should I talk to the financial aid office?

This is a Continuing student,
The deadline to submit my parents’ tax return is May 2nd, right? But on USConnect, I’ve already filled out the info of the tax return online and clicked “submit”. Do I still have to scan the tax return or physically submit the tax return to the Financial Aid Office? Thanks!

atbui92, sometimes there is just no way to get the tax returns in by USC’s deadline (as you have found out). It would be a good idea to send an email to let them know that you will submit them as soon as you are able so they don’t think you have forgotten or did not notice the request. They will do their best to get your package to you by the May 1st commitment deadline - if they can’t, be sure to request an extension of that deadline (in writing) from USC and your back-up school. If the back-up school will not grant an extension you may have to make a deposit to hold a place until you are sure USC will work financially. Better safe than sorry!

**shinywing/B, yes, May 2nd is the returning student deadline for tax returns. So far, entering the information online has resulted in all of the freshman applicants receiving a further request to upload the actual documents. It has arrived within 24 hours. I do not know if returning students will receive the same request - be sure to post to let us know if you are/are not asked for the actual documents.
