Fare Thee Well - 50 Years of the Grateful Dead

Just saw my sister post her first photos of the concert in Chicago, I-dad! It’s lovely weather here.

I have great seats! Airconditioning. Mug of coffee. A little single malt scotch. Couch Tour. Love it. Beats driving to Chicago.

First set was awesome. They took off where the 2nd night in Cali left off, maybe even more. Still haven’t repeated a song and they are LONG way from running out of material:

Set I:
Box of Rain
Jack Straw,
Bertha
Passenger
The Wheel
Crazy Fingers
The Music Never Stopped

They commissioned five hours of mellow jams for the intermissions at the five shows from Neil Casals, guitar player formerly of Ryan Adams and the Cardinals.

Haha. So we are on the couch tour as well. Great seats, red wine and clean uncrowned bathrooms!

DH is very annoyed by all the “elevator music” I’ve been playing thanks to this thread.

*crowded. Haha an interesting slip since the b-room is sometimes called the “throne.”

*Set I:
Box of Rain
Jack Straw,
Bertha
Passenger
The Wheel
Crazy Fingers
The Music Never Stopped

Set II:
Mason’s Children
Scarlet Begonias
Fire on the Mountain
Drums
Space
New Potato Caboose
Playing in the Band
Space
Let It Grow
Help on the Way
Slipknot!
Franklin’s Tower

Encore:

Love the Dead, but I’m having a hard time listening without Jerry. I’ve only been to a couple shows, including at RFK Stadium in DC in July 1986, I think, with Dylan. It was close 100 degrees that day.

And on this rainy day in DC nearly 30 years later I can’t help but think of one of my favorite, “Box of Rain”

Such a long long time to be gone
And a short time to be there

Interestedad- thanks for those you tube clips of Santa Clara concerts- any chance there are clips of last night’s event?
You were right they did take down those you tube clips, but they were up for few days !

South Jersey:

I’ll post links as they pop up. I don’t see any from the webcast feeds. Looks like they are being blocked.

I wasn’t crazy about last night’s show. It was heavy on seldom played rarities – two more songs that had been played fewer than 20 times and none since 1970. Also a lot of stuff from later album. Second set was very heavy on the space jam stuff.

Having said that, the Franklins Tower to close the second set was awesome and the Ripple encore was probably the best song they’ve played in three shows.

Note: Still not a single repeated song.

I hear ya. I was fortunate to get over that by enjoying a bunch of terrific Phil Lesh and Friends concerts a while back. I realized that great music, played by great musicians, is still great music. And, it’s not like Jerry Garcia had been a musical force in his final few years. He was a mess. A terminal junkie. And, many of his shows were pretty bad. There were nights when he just turned down his guitar because he couldn’t play…

These shows are better than a lot of the later Dead shows.

In any case, I’m just glad that I get to enjoy a run of five final shows from the comfort of my couch.

Showtime. Night 2 in Chicago. I figure there’s gotta be a “US Blues” for the 4th.

Nice. They even have a live shot from the blimp above Soldier Field and the Chicago lakefront. Pretty nice webcast…

Either that or the drone cam got away from them?

Holy mackerel. 1 hour 25 minute first set. Smokin’. By far the best set of the run so far. Terrific set list and the band was on fire.

They finally repeated one song from the first night - Cumberland Blues.

**Set I: **
Shakedown Street
Liberty
Standing on the Moon
Me and My Uncle
Tennessee Jed
Cumberland Blues
Little Red Rooster
Friend of the Devil

Fireworks at the finale. Nobody is leaving. By far the best show so far.
4 hours 27 minutes tonight, including a one hour intermission. Four shows in, they have repeated one song.

Nice to have a report. Friends and neighbors drove down to attend. I like some of the music and observing the love shown.

By process of elimination, tonight’s final show is looking pretty good. The material yet to be played is among their best live stuff.

Just off the top of my head, the possibilities include:

Dire Wolf
Cosmic Charlie
Cassidy
Big Boss Man
Mama Tried
El Paso
Me and Bobby McGee
Ramble on Rose
Looks like Rain
To Lay Me Down
Mexicali Blues
They Love Each Other
Big River
Dark Hollow
Deep Elem Blues
New Speedway Boogie
Touch of Gray

Good Lovin’
Dancin’ in the Street
Going Down the Road
Not Fade Away
China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider
Sugaree

And, I see a repeat of Truckin. They started the first show with it in Santa Clara. Do they close the 50 year run with a final encore tonight? What a long strange trip it’s been…

Last night’s video production was amazing. They had one of the flying stadium cable cams (the kind that are used at NFL games) with great shots zooming over the crowd and up to the top of the stage. And, they used the blimp shot all night long, including for the Navy Pier fireworks during intermission and the Soldier Field fireworks at the close of the concert.

They even cut in some shots from NYC:

I’ve been a fan of concert videos since way back. It’s really impressive to see how far it’s come.

They have really clamped down on the YouTubes. There has been NOTHING from the webcast of the Chicago shows. Nothing. Just iPhone videos from the crowd.

Thanks Idad - saw an iPhone video - tonight s concert vs World Cup final. Big night

Bummer on the youtube videos . I wanted to watch those later.

Maybe they’ll lighten up on the YouTubes once the webcasts are over. You can still get the archived webcasts. Last night’s show was easily worth $29.95 to watch it for a month. Great music, great sound, great video.

Here’s a YouTube of the webcast audio of last night’s Cumberland Blues:
