Fascinating photos -- what each Best Actress winner wore to the Oscars from 2014 back to 1929

Very fun to look at the choices.

Mary Pickford’s gown from 1930 would still win fashion awards today, imo.

Thanks for posting that, arabrab - I found it very interesting to look back on the fashion choices.

That was fun to read and see! Thank you. So many beautiful ones…but i will always love CHER! She is just a riot. Moonstruck is still my favorite movie of all time, or at least tied with Love, Actually.

I love Cher as well - and Moonstruck is a favorite. “Snap out of it!” I love Julia Roberts’ look - the dress and hair are perfect together.

love it! thanks for posting!

Such fun to see those! I loved that dress that Mary Pickford wore, too. It looked like something that would be worn on Downton Abbey.

Great photos - such fun to see all these great stars. The story is that Claudette Colbert was on a train the year she won for “It Happened One Night.” She hadn’t thought she’d win, and was called off the train to accept her award, which is why she’s wearing a traveling suit in her picture. http://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2010/04/a-perfect-star-199801

During WWII, the Academy scaled down its celebration, so most of the women didn’t wear gowns then, either (Jennifer Jones, Ingrid Bergman, etc.). I’m a big Bette Davis fan, but I’ve never understood why she wore such an odd, unbecoming dress the first year she won.

I loved Natalie Portman’s look when she won - maternity wear was never more gorgeous.

Wow! Joanne Woodward made her own gown in 1958, and it looks great! Imagine anyone doing that today.

Julie Christie made her own in 1966, too!

Sorry to focus on the negative, but Marlee Matlin’s dress is hideous. Loretta Young’s 1948 dress didn’t do much for me either. Cher’s was crazy, but omg that body.

I have always loved Grace Kelly’s dress. Other favorites were Hallee Berry’s, mainly because it just showed what an incredible figure she has, Julia Roberts’ dress, and Holly Hunter’s.

Great thread. Thanks for posting.

I was also amazed that Joanne Woodward & Julie Christie made their own dressed.

Thanks for posting the link. Fascinating!
