Hello, I did the fasfa caster about a month ago and it said I would receive a pell grant, I then filled out the real thing and it also said I was eligible (less then the caster). Well the school said they wanted to link it with my parents tax info online and when that happened, even though all the financial information was exactly the same it said I was not eligible, I cross referenced every line and the only thing that changed between the applications were on line 74. “parents number in college on 2014-2015 (parents excluded).” On my eligible one it was a 2…In my not eligible it was a 1. I am confused because Me and My Mother are in college so I figured that number would be 2. On the fasfa caster there is a question in parent information that reads, “While you are in college, how many people in your parents’ household will be college students? (Include yourself)” I put 2 there. One last thing, on the front of the fasfa is says based on our records your efc is 003951 on my eligible and 006738 on the not eligible. Any help is greatly appreciated.

It says parents excluded because a parent can not be included as one in school on the child’s FAFSA. That is why your FAFSA was changed to one in school.

However, the child can be included as one in school on the parent’s FAFSA. So your Mom can include you on her FAFSA.

I see about that question, but I don’t understand why I get nothing now, family of 4 with an income of less then $64,000 and no assets, and Me and my mother in school. when I do the caster I qualify. Don’t know if I will even be able to go now because there is no way I can afford it.

If you’re putting 2 in the forecaster, that’s why you qualify. But it’s a mistake to do so. Having 2 in college vs. 1 approximately halves your efc. When your mom isn’t included, as she shouldn’t be, it increases your efc to be out of Pell range.

The Pell has an EFC range for eligibility. With a 0 EFC a student is eligible for the full Pell. As the EFC goes up pel eligibility goes down. Once your EFC goes over that cut off (around 5080 last year, not sure what it is this year but probably similar), you are no longer eligible for any Pell. When you mistakenly put two in school it caused any part of your EFC derived from your Mom’s financial info to be halved. Once that error was corrected, your EFC doubled back to what it should be, making you ineligible for the Pell grant.
