After I took a second look at my processed FASFA I noticed that Free/Reduced Lunch was on the list of Family Assistance Programs. I carelessly skipped reading these Family Assistance Programs because typically, there aren’t any that I am a part of . However this time there was Free/Reduced Lunch as one of the options, and I do have Free/Reduced Lunch, and I did not mark it. I did not leave it blank on purpose, I just did not notice it. When I went to make correction on the FASFA site, it was one of those boxes that you can not correct(the dark shaded ones). What should I do? All my schools have their priority deadline today!!! Also, if i were to make a correction, would that mean the schools will receive it late and I wont get as much? My original FASFA application has already been completed and processed if it matters.

Most likely, you answered yes to another question that has the same effect on the EFC formula as free/reduced lunch. Did you say yes to “parent filed or could file a 1040A or 1040EZ,” or was your parent not required to file a tax return, or is one of your parents a dislocated worker? If so, it doesn’t matter that you didn’t check free/reduced lunch.

@kelsmom
No i did not say “yes” to any of those.

Anyone else have a valuable response ?

There’s no point in panicking, I don’t think. You filed by the deadline. If there’s a correction that needs to be made, it can be made afterwards. People often file first, and make corrections later - and that doesn’t change their original filing date.

Kelsmom is the expert, though, and she should be able to help you sort through how to fix your particular situation. So, be patient - I’m sure she’ll be back!

kelsmom, i think you might be referring to the “skip logic” of the FASFA. As in I answered one question that made this question not show up. However, this question DID show up, i remember seeing the TANF program or w.e with a bunch of other programs, but I just skipped it on accident. Now, I would like to change the answer to avoid any speculation of being sketchy/fraud, but it doesnt let me correct it, can anyone help?

There is some reason you cannot correct it. Did you do a direct transfer of tax info from the IRS?

@kelsmom
Yes I did

What is your EFC from this processed fafsa? What was your parent’s AGI? Which tax form does your SAR say your parents filed?

my EFC was about 3200. my parents AGI was about 57000. and they filed the jointly, form 1040 i believe

Well, it’s not what I was thinking. But because your parents’ AGI is over $49,999, checking the reduced lunch box would not be of any benefit to you. That’s probably why it’s grayed out, your not eligible for the simplified means test. Did you enter less than $49,999 on your estimated fafsa and then the retrieval tool changed it to the $57,000? That would explain why you would have seen those questions the first time you did fafsa.

It’s possible that the free/reduced lunch can be checked off on the initial FAFSA transaction regardless of the AGI entered. Once the DRT is used, though, and AGI is >$50k, the logic would prevent an update of that section.
