fashion question

For my river cruise, I have a very comfy long black shirt for evenings. It’s okay to wear a long-ish tunic top over a long skirt isn’t it? I don’t normally wear leggings or tunics, so I don’t really have any. But I think that would be okay for a long skirt. Yay or nay? Here it is:

I’m always cautious about stating a negative opinion on fashion as we don’t know your height or body type. However, I wouldn’t wear a long top with a long shirt unless it was belted with a wide belt and then perhaps with a shorter jacket for a trendy look, and in some sort of heels.

I think that top would look better with a skirt right above your knees if not belted. And that top doesn’t look to be the belted kind.

I’m no fashion expert, but I think it would look OK as long as the skirt was more of an A-line, straight skirt and not flouncy.

I do think body type matters a bit as @conmama says - especially if you are on the fence about this decision.

I do think you want to be sure you don’t have too much “flowy” going on. Flowy shirt AND flowy skirt might just add too much volume to your look? How about a pair of pointe pants if something like “leggings” aren’t your thing?

I am personally very anti belt for myself. Literally don’t own one belt and have no desire. This shows how different we all are! A belt around my waist feels like a chain around my neck!

Thanks!

Is there any reason why you can’t get a nice pair of black slacks? I think that would look better than any type of skirt.

I would not pair a flowy top with a long flowy skirt; just not enough definition between pieces. For that top, I would wear dressy black pants (I’m not a leggings person) and a heeled sandal.

I would wear a fancy shirt or fitted jacket with a long black skirt. How dressy do you want to be?

As others have said, it really depends on your body type/shape.

I also think it can just depend on your style. I know people who always wear everything flowy. It’s just part of who they are. They don’t look fashion-forward, but they look like themselves.

That top doesn’t look “flowy” to me.

I have nice black pants, yes. No problem. I’ll wear it with them. They aren’t leggings, but they are slim fitting type. I’ll wear something else with the skirt.

Perfect solution. I like the top, and I think it will look great with almost black pants. Enjoy your cruise!

So from a guy’s perspective I think the top is super cute with black slacks. This store just opened up down the block from me in Chicago and might show some latest trends. I don’t shop much but it seems kinda pricey but just for the idea of what Is being shown. The shirt you showed reminded me of this. https://www.johnnywas.com/new-arrivals.html

Lol at autocorrect. I have no idea how that “almost” ended up there.

I am very much of a solid color kind of person, adding accent with a scarf. Tunic top over skirt tend to look better on taller women.

^^ I wondered about that! “Almost” black? Like as in GRAY!?

I have a Johnny Was tunic, purple on purple. I’ve worn it with black leggings. I bought my future DIL a black on black top. She could wear with blue or black jeans. The store can be overwhelming with all the colors, it I bought my tops in a regular store.

I love the top in the first link. I agree it would be nice with black slacks (and my blue eyeglasses, but I digress). Your black skirt would be a versatile item to have with other tops. Enjoy the cruise!

What about something like this ensemble. You don’t have to wear a belt. But you could pick any color top or cardigan match. Just blouse out the top underneath a little, but you get coverage with a longer cardigan.

Here is tip for cruisers (more for big ships than river cruises). I had no need for purse, but I carried a silk tote bag to dinner with sweater and case for my glasses / sunglasses. Often we also put DH’s camera in it. That way I was prepared when cooler outside.
