H and are attending his HS reunion in NJ in April. I only own very casual spring coats and am looking for a lightweight coat to wear over a dress in case the weather isn’t really warm yet. And yes I know it may actually still be quite cold then but hoping for the best. Plus I’d like to just have a lightweight coat in my closet for other occasions. You all always have such great suggestions, I’d love to get some opinions. And also do you all think a dress similar to the one below would be appropriate for an evening HS reunion reception type event? Welcome any other ideas of places to look. TIA!
The dress I’m planning to wear is similar to this: https://www.nicandzoe.com/terrace-twirl-dress-5849.html?color=Multi
I like both of those. The reviews on the halogen are not helpful … one says it wrinkles too easily and looks cheap, the other says it looks crisp all the time. The double-breasted one is a notch more elegant.
I like the dress, it’s fine for a reunion. I was surprised that more people didn’t dress up at our 40th last fall. A big urban high school. More women wore slack, skinny black jeans, boots. Nicely dressed, just not dresses. I wore one. I didn’t feel out of place, just surprised there weren’t more.
Either of the jackets are pretty. I like the first one the best.
jollymama- thanks! good point about the reviews. I didn’t think to even look though those aren’t particularly helpful.
conmama- yes! it will be interesting to see whether people dress up or not. At my 20th, most people dressed up.
I may order them both and see what they look like irl since it’s Nordstrom and the shipping is free
MAmom111- Thanks! I don’t wear dresses that much anymore but I love this one!
The dress is super cute! Wii anyone even see your coat for more than a minute? At my last HS reunion from a public HS in an upper middle class suburb everyone wore black pants or nice jeans, dressy tops. And we hung up our coats within seconds of entering. But I’d be more concerned that only two people brought spouses and they seemed pretty miserable. The out of town era either came to town alone or their spouses hung with in laws or just relaxed at hotel. All of my friends have noted recently that spouses attending doesn’t seem to be a “ thing” around here. Maybe you know that it’s different there and several other spouse will attend or maybe you don’t care? But wanted to mention it.
I was going to second… great dress, but I would not spend money on either of those coats. To me, a coat is an investment. $100 does not a good coat buy, as Yoda would say. Use your money as a downpayment on a nice gently used Burberry trench or a Max Mara wrap from RealReal.
NJ in April will still a bit cold. A nice spring coat may be a brighter color light weight cashmere or angora coat. I have a yellow and a pink coat without lining, and they are good when it’s about 40-60 degrees out.
The dress is really cute. I like both jackets but think the draped one matches the style of the dress better than the double-breated coat. Another option would be a cashmere wrap. How cold will it be in April?
Thanks everybody for all the input, I appreciate it all.
Raclut- sadly no, I don’t have a cashmere duster. Good idea though.
Thumper1, swimmersmom2- good idea about the cashmere wrap, I will look for that. New Jersey in April so the weather is unpredictable. Might still be cold but I doubt I’ll be bringing a heavy winter coat.
Maya54- yes, that’s the reason I don’t already have something really appropriate to wear because I always just wear whatever casual coat I can get away with and ditch it right away! Getting a little tired of always looking mismatched though, feel like I’m impersonating an adult. We’re spending time with inlaws the rest of the weekend. I have met some of the people before and if I can find just one or two people to talk to I think it will be fine. There’s a couple of people my H would like me to meet.
BB- good input also, I’ve been trying to gradually update my wardrobe since we’re not paying tuition anymore but maybe should wait until I can splurge on a really nice coat that will last longer!
Oldfort- that’s cool, wouldn’t expect everyone to like the dress, I like it a lot though and feel good wearing it
I like the 2nd and 3rd dresses you linked.
I’m sorry if I didn’t answer everyone, I appreciate the opinions and suggestions. Also will consider if I could go more casual with pants and a nice top.
^ True, I’ll have to see what the weather is when we get closer to the date, and have at least 2 options. Thanks!
If it looks like it’s going to be warmer I could go with a wrap instead of a coat. I’m just trying to wear something I already have because for various reasons I have not been able to get out and shop and I tend to get overwhelmed when I start internet shopping if I’m not very focused on something specific.
