My daughter is attending her first year in college starting Fall 2012. Her dad began finishing his degree fall 2011- so he took 2 classes fall 2011, 1 class winter session and 2 more in spring 2012. Will he count as a qualified family member attending school?

Not for your D — but if he were to fill out a FAFSA, both he & your D would count for him, if he is at least half time. But parents do not count in number in college for the student.

thanks
This is all rather intimidating the first time around! lol

ok- I do fill out the fafsa for both of them. So I can count 2 when I do hubby’s, (he is 1/2 time) but only 1 on D’s?

Yes. The parent can count himself & his child … the child can only count herself.

ok- do I count his tuition/books as education credits on D’s form or his, or both?
