Favorite Children's Books

Penelope Leach, The Family Bed, La Leche League nursing book and another Hanna fan.

Hannas! “Zipper and Stripes”

Penelope Leach, Berry Brazelton, Ashley Montagu, Sheila Kitzinger…
[oh look, I found the newspaper that used to arrive with the cloth diaper delivery!](http://www.nwbaby.com/</a>)

The first one wore biobottoms- they were easier than pins and plastic pants but the 2nd one barely wore diapers at all. Not because she was toilet trained  but because she couldn’t stand them. The cloth diapers she wouldn’t even let me put on her & the paper diapers she tolerated because soon she would remove them herself. She used to run through the house " don’t change my diapers! change your mind!"

Does anyone remember “Catwings,” a little publication that my S LOVED (but didn’t last very long as I remember)? All I remember is there were flying cats and the illustrations were nice.

My D liked Catwings too. There are four books in the series by Ursula K. LeGuin. They are still available on Amazon.

“The Princess and the Goblin” had me spellbound as a child…with the old woodcut illustrations…Loved the Princess being brave, the Grandmother who magically appeared …and Curdie.

The kids and I had fun thinking about this…

Gosh yes, Raising Your Spirited Child was MY favorite book when DS was young!!

Penelope Leach was always in reach that first year.
I loved reading the Little Critter Books by Mercer Mayer to my S. I kept that whole collection of books in hopes of someday passing them.

How about (for me) The Lonely Doll, A Little Princess and The Secret Garden.
Then I raised sons and it was The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Brrrr by James Stevenson (and all of his books–hilarious), Jamberry, the entire Magic Treehouse Series, all of Brian Jaques books, The Merlin books, Harry Potter, Tolkien and in the all-to-quick blink of an eye, the leap is made into adult books. What a trip down memory lane viewed through the books sitting on S’s bookshelves–thanks for starting this thread and also reminding me of all the great literature out there.

^Wait, is this implying that Harry Potter and Tolkien are NOT adult books? :)

three cheers for the Lonely Doll and Bear

Bailey Goes Camping – younger brother book

Where’s My Monkey? one of the best illustrated, wordless books

Aileen Fisher poetry – esp. “Listen, Rabbit”, boy enjoys wild rabbit in nature

Enemy Pie – Dad resolves triangle caused by new kid on block

Owl Moon and Jamberry and Grover’s Kitten

Marguerite Henry esp. King of the Wind

JHS, I just got around to your list of things CC won’t agree on, but we all agree on Chinaberry books. Great post and count me in on Chinaberry books!
Maybe the best predictor of admission to top college is having a parent fascinated with the Chinaberry offerings.

“Maybe the best predictor of admission to top college is having a parent fascinated with the Chinaberry offerings.”

I certainly hope that’s true, cottonwood.

I wonder (since CC) about other predictors? How about Bradley Method vs Lamaze? Breastfeeding how long?) vs formula?

E. Nesbit books are wonderful (CS Lewis modeled his Chronicles of Narnia on Nesbit and the Half Magic books were also inspired by E. Nesbit), including Three Children and It, The Enchanted Castle. Books of Wonder publishes some of her books, and the Oz books (also great), in beautiful hardcovers at reasonable prices.
King Matt the First is another good book that many haven’t heard of.

Many of our favorites have already been mentioned, but we have a few to add:

The Polar Express

and two anthologies (that we had when I was a kid, and I found them in a bookstore before our oldest was born):

The Tall Book of Christmas (including great stories like: Granny Glittens and her Amazing Mittens, Giant Grummers’ Christmas and Christmas Through a Knothole)

The Bumper Book (including stories and poems–The Wee Little Kitten Who Sucked Her Thumb, Grandfather’s Penny and many more!)

Yep. Chinaberry, Penelope Leach, Bradley and you don’t want to know how long I breastfed!

Roxaboxen, seconded, thirded.
