Favorite current NYC broadway show/casual restaurant?

My husband and I will be in NYC in a few weeks and are overwhelmed with the options of shows. We saw Book of Mormon in London a few years ago (and loved it), but haven’t seen much else. Do you have something to recommend that’s on or off broadway that’s as entertaining as the Book of Mormon? Also, if you have any suggestions of favorite restaurants in any part of Manhattan (with the price of an entree under $30), please share. Thanks!

Here is a list of Broadway shows and some off Broadway which are running now. http://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/whatson/

As for relatively inexpensive we like Hells Kitchen. We haven’t been since they moved into new space. It’s in the theater district.

Hamilton, Hamilton, Hamilton…if you can get tickets! Have also heard wonderful things about Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Restaurants are harder…but we like Bettola on the upper West Side.

^^^ Unfortunately it’s not possible to get tickets to Hamilton. :frowning:

Are you looking for funny like Book of Morman? Some that have won awards are Gentlemen’s Guide to Love and Murder and Beautiful, the Carol King musical. Old favorites Phamton of the Opera, Wicked, and Jersey Boys are still running. Probably have a hard time getting tickets to Hamilton. We had fun eating at Ellens Stardust Diner with singing waiters right in Times Square. Can’t remember pricing though.

Yes, we’re looking for something entertaining and upbeat.

Check out Beautful

Hamilton is spectacular but unless you’re willing to spend ~$1000/ticket, it isn’t going to happen. DRS closed about 9 years ago, so you must be thinking of some other show!

Beautiful is a very enjoyable show, especially if you love Carole King’s music.

Maybe she is thinking of Something Rotten.

I second (third or whatever) seeing Beautiful.

Kinky Boots is a fun show and should be an easy ticket.

I’m going to throw in a vote for Something Rotten. It’s hilarious and written by one of the Book of Mormon writers.

Check out Trattoria Trecolori. It’s in the heart of the theater district and has amazing Italian food. Make sure you have a reservation, though, as it’s very busy before and after showtime.

One of the cast members of Hamilton is a local gal. She is the same age as my son. They grew up doing theater together, often as two òf the principles in some of our local community theater plays. When they did Secret Garden, she was Mary and he was Colin. The two children leads if you don’t know the play.

Son is still involved in the local community theater and she is a cast member of the hottest play on Broadway. Sigh!!! I would rather the reverse, but oh well.

BTW, if you watch Hamilton’s cast tribute to Chorus Line’s 40th anniversary, she is a featured singer. Again, sigh… :((

@morrismm, I liked how they allowed the ensemble members to sing that tribute. Those guys and gals don’t get the opportunity to do so in the show. They are all excellent dancers which is clearly why they were cast but it’s nice for them to get their moment in voice, too.

We were in NYC in September and saw Something Rotten and loved it. My sister was able to get a single ticket to Hamilton and said it was fabulous. If you haven’t seen Jersey Boys or Lion King they are both great. You can usually get discounted tickets to Jersey Boys at TKTs. After watching Aladdin’s Genie perform ‘Friend Like Me’ on the Tony’s in 2014, I really want to see Aladdin, maybe next trip…

On the resale Ticketmaster site, there are some Hamilton tickets available for upcoming performances in the $350 range (adjacent seats). So, if you really want to see it, there are some tickets available for under $1000!

I would second the recommendation for Kinky Boots. Great show!

I loved Lion King the twice I saw it. Absolutely amazing stage production and scenery.

I am partial to a place called The West Bank Cafe. Reservations required. http://www.westbankcafe.com/

Restaurant Row – 46th St., between 8 and 9 Ave. All the restaurants on this street understand the need to get you out in time to see a show. I went there last Saturday, with no reservations, ate at a Brazilian restaurant, definitely paid less than $30/entree, made my show with time to spare. This is where I usually go before an evening theater performance. I’ve eaten at several places here.

Also loved Beautiful. Liked Kinky Boots. There’s a lot of stuff in previews right now.
