We don’t get trick or treaters either, but I can’t resist the candy on display seemingly everywhere. I bought Take 5 bars, Reese’s pumpkins, plus a bag of Milky Ways that are stored in the freezer (if you aren’t familiar with this particular “delicacy,” you throw a frozen, wrapped bar on the garage floor so it cracks into smaller pieces, then enjoy). Both H and I are pretty good about eating candy in moderation, so this will (hopefully) last until the kids get home for Thanksgiving.
Oooooh, Milky Ways in the freezer, be still my heart.
100Grand bars are also fabulous in the freezer.
Alas, all such things are off limits to me since being diagnosed with T2 diabetes.
We are the darlings of the neighborhood… bundles of Pixie Sticks.
Returning kids know us by our tradition of giving out sugar in straw tubes and newbies actually scream with delight.
Nothing like giving the kids flavored sugar to spill all over their homes…
We live on a small street. At one point…we had maybe 10 trick or treat kids. H
The last years we have have had none. They all go t9 parties now instead.
Still, I’ll make up bags with three full size candy bars. I usually get almond joy, Reese’s PB cups and nestles crunch.
I alsuwas get skittles too…one kid has a peanut allergy.
My personal favorite Halloween candy is candy corn. I won’t buy it…because I can eat a whole bag in one sitting.
PB cups r my fav, so I got KItKats instead. Also, Costco had Oreos on sale, and chips. I suspect most everything will go.
We get maybe 3 trick or treaters. It’s not even worth buying candy and getting up to answer the door. But, of course I buy York Peppermint Patties for me and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups for H. We’ve resorted to turning off the lights and hiding in the back because we don’t get anyone at the door.
+1 on Reese’s PB cups and Butterfingers. Love Clark bars too but not even sure if they make them anymore.
I don’t see how anyone can eat Candy Corn. To me it tastes like sugared wax.
Why don’t they make dark chocolate M&Ms in snack size bags? I’d be all over that
I just tasted the Mallow Creme Pumpkins from Williams-Sonoma - amazing! I love Mounds bars but I may have just found a new favorite Halloween candy.
How many candies do you give each kid?
@coolweather I start out kind of cheap. like two or three snack size candies. If I have a low turnout, which is sadly the norm these days, I let them take what they want. And they are usually so sweet, not greedy. I might switch over to full size candy bars. Everybody gets one.
We get so many kids that I buy at least 10 large bags of candy and it is gone within 2 hrs. I usually buy the tootsie roll assorted bags with the dots. The kids don’t really care for the dots but I like eating them. My personal favorite is candy corn, milky ways and almond joys. I also love mexican candy but tend to buy that just for me…no sharing.
We will be out of state in a hotel again this Halloween. I knew weeks ago so will be giving out HI edible treats to those I meet at the conference, as is my custom, holiday of not.
My absolute favs are Necco Wafers, Uno Bars and Heath Bars. We give out Sweet and Salty Nut Bars, M&M’s, Peppermint Patty’s, Rocky Road Bars and packaged toothbrushes. By the way, the toothbrushes are a big hit with the kids !
We only buy candy we won’t eat. We open it just in time to fill two big bowls, and any left candy left in the bowls when we’re ready to call it a night all goes into that lucky last kid’s bag.
Speaking of Reese Pieces, I really like the dark chocolate peanut butter cups that they sell right by the cashier for 99 cents at Trader Joe’s. I honestly have never had Neccos. In our area the mall has trick or treating and that is popular with the little kids with their parents. The college kids like to go trick or treating at Embassy Row.
When we were teens, we’d go to my Jewish friends Friday night services, and they’d go to Sunday Mass with us.Actually mostly the Saturday Vigil Masses. My girlfriend freaked out when we all got up for Communion. “Where are you going?” “To get Necco Wafers, and you can’t come!” We were very snarky teenagers. At least the Jewish services had refreshments!
Compelled to add that we’re lighting up the house with LED lights that my son put up, because we’re in the middle of the block, and some of the neighbors don’t participate. We love this holiday, and don’t want kids to look down the street and see a dark house. To us this is the most fun, creative, community event we’ll ever see. We know it’s on it’s way out, but we’re going to stand by it.
I put up my Halloween flag 2 weeks ago, as well as window decorations. I did half as much inside, but my witch is hung, near her broom.
@HarvestMoon1 you can purchase Clark Bars on Amazon. I love them, but don’t see them often. I may have to send for a box for Halloween. I also love Zagnut bars, but I only buy them when I see them which might be once every 6 months. I might buy 2 or 3 to have a stash for when I am desperate for one, but not usually.
We were at my dear MIL’s house last year. I got to give out the candy. She easily had 200 kids. We went through about 10 large bags of candy. Lots of fun.
I give out Crunch Bars as a rule. Chocolate without the problem of peanuts.
