Favorite Movies and Recommendations

Les Choristes (The Chorus) - easiest subtitled movie to watch EVER. It’s a touching and humorous story about a teacher who comes to a boys school in France and teaches them to sing. Beautiful voices and one of my favorites this year.

Garden State is a GREAT soundtrack!

I really appreciate the suggestions as I am pretty tired of wandering through Blockbuster’s family aisles (2 for the price of one Sun. thru Thurs.) trying to find something remarkable to watch - or at least mildly appealing.

Forgot to add the fabulously well-acted “The Green Mile”, Gods Must be Crazy 1 and SOme Like it Hot for great laughs, and Black Stallion for sheer beauty

One we just re-watched a few weeks ago:
Babette’s Feast
I’ve only watched it in Danish/French w/ English subtitles, although you can choose all English on the DVD (I think).

One of my all-time favorites is The Man Who Would be King. Michael Caine, Sean Connery. This may be one of those “what was going on in your life” movies that brings back wonderful memories. But whatever the reason, I can watch it over and over.

I’ve seen October Sky numerous times with my kids and will continue to watch it. Looking for Bobby Fischer never fails to make me cry. Yes, my boys played competitive chess at that age.

I love many others that have been mentioned. I don’t think anyone has mentioned the classic Don’t Look Now with Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie. It’s verrry scary and has a somewhat tasteful love scene that has been on several “best love scene” lists. Plus, I spent a considerable amount of time in Venice after I saw it and always looked over my shoulder.

Oh
That reminds me of one of my favorite movies of all time and if you love dialogue & history I highly recommend it

The Lion in Winter with Peter o Toole, anthony Hopkins, and Katherine Hepburn who plays Eleanor of Aquitaine
another Katherine Hepburn
movie which was made for tv but also stars Lawerence Olivier
Love Among the Ruins
also must see are African Queen starring Kate ( with Bogart)
Adam’s Rib ( with Spencer Tracy)
boy they just don’t make em like that anymore

Two of my favorites (very different from each other):

Kagemusha (The Shadow Warrior)

It Happened One Night (and pretty much everything else that Frank Capra directed)

do any 1 see indian movies

i like the film cast away

just reading dartmouth events schedule and see nov 9 they are honoring sidney lumet who made Network, 12 angry men, serpico, dog day afternoon and one of my favorite Paul Newman movies THE VERDICT…the verdict is one of the best cast movies ever from james mason as the opposing attorney and the incredible performances by the judge , the sidekick(jack warden), the girlfriend, the nurse, the brother in law,the doctor, the hired gun testifying doctor etc…

12 angry men

That reminds me of another great court movie
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053946/</a>
Inherit the Wind

meeting Mr Kramer was one of the highlights of living in Bellevue- ( we eventually both moved back to where we were more comfortable}

over30, oh my goodness, Don’t Look Now is probably the scariest movie I’ve ever seen! I understand why you looked over your shoulder while in Venice. After seeing that film, I swore to never visit that city!

Saw In Her Shoes last night and enjoyed it very much. I admit I didn’t know much about it going in and mistakenly thought it was going to be a light-hearted comedy. Nope. It had some great comedic moments but it was an interesting story about family and the transformation of its three main characters. Great performances by Toni Collette, Cameron Diaz, and Shirley Maclaine.

No doubt about it, Sidney Lumet is a genius. He directed another of my very favorites - Murder on the Orient Express. This film has a brilliant cast - Albert Finney in a glorious performance, Sean Connery, Ingrid Bergman, Lauren Bacall, John Gielgud, Vanessa Redgrave, Wendy Hiller, Rachel Roberts, Martin Balsam, Anthony Perkins, Richard Widmark …

Also recommended: Chinatown, The Conversation, Stage Door, Christmas in Connecticut, The Women, A Passageto India, Out of Africa, Master and Commander, Charade. Now I love that last one - it’s pretty thin stuff, but Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn make it enchanting. I happily avoided the remake (The Truth about Charlie starring Mark Wahlberg - who’s a good actor, just not Cary Grant).

I thought Mark Wahlberg was great in the Perfect Storm
very hard movie to watch- but excellent

emerald…agree with you about inherit the wind…and so topical once again with evolution and intelligent design…only problem the makup on matthew brady character a little over done…gene kelly had a good role as newpaper reporter

Check Out Foreign Films…they Are Very Creative …

Hitchkock films have been on all week-torn curtain, etc
Flms I will love as wached them innumerable times with S: ET, Bambi, My Cousin Vinny, Starwars 4 & 5

bookworm

isnt it amazing how My Cousin Vinny shows up on so many peoples lists
for those people who never seen it…it is one of joe pesci best roles, a comedy and he doesnt have to hack anyone to death in it…it is a simple story of an inexperienced lawyer saving two “YOUTS” from prison…

Fred Gwynne and Marisa Tomei give wonderful performances in that film, as well.

emerald, I agree with you about Mark Wahlberg in The Perfect Storm. The entire cast is terrific in that movie (Diane Lane, John Reilly, George Clooney). My husband and I often re-watch action films (not my favorite genre but he likes it lots), yet somehow we never want to see The Perfect Storm again - it’s just too hopeless, I guess.

A good, somewhat overlooked thriller from a few years ago is Paycheck with Ben Affleck, Uma Thurman, Paul Giamatti and Aaron Eckhart. Ben Affleck is one of those actors who’s been in so many bad movies (and, yes, a smattering of good ones) that you have to wonder what happened between the script he said yes to and the mess you’re seeing on the screen. But Paycheck’s a good one.

how about favorite sports movies?
for me #1 Hoosiers gene hackman, dennis hopper…2nd place the more obscure Breaking Away about the boy who fakes hes italian to impress a college girl and the bike racing between the townies (cutters) and the frat boys…#3 Remember the Titans with its great casting and music…honorable mention “61” recent hbo movie by billie crystal about Maris and Mantle

Breaking Away is a wonderful film!!! Very smart, very sweet, a true original. It was filmed on location at IU and surrounding Bloomington, Indiana. There are great performances from Dennis Christopher, Paul Dooley, and the very young Dennis Quaid and Daniel Stern, among others. Why don’t I own this? (Note to self: buy it.)

In theaters now and not great but very enjoyable: Prime with Meryl Streep and Uma Thurman. This is a sweet romantic comedy with some very big laughs. Meryl Streep is hugely funny and Uma Thurman excellent as ever. The young actor who plays her love interest, Bryan Greenberg, is also very good.
