Favorite non-flagship state universities? [<$40-50k out-of-state, undecided major]

Goodness. We are in state and lots of kids from my daughter’s school go and we have never heard this. She just toured in Dec and asked about housing for upperclassmen and was told it was getting tighter and they were incentivizing students to move off campus but that it wasn’t a problem. I’m glad to have this info but if that is the only reason you crossed it off the list it’s worth checking into again. Super frustrating.

Which MSU ? I know Montana was mentioned up thread. I hear MSU and huge and I think Michigan State - but then maybe not outdoorsy.

But that leads me to Northern Michigan U, in outdoorsy Marquette, 20 mins from an airport just under 7k kids. Might be worth investigating the surrounds.

Here’s some info - sounds like may be getting better.

I was thinking Michigan State - never even contemplated other MSUs, but I guess there are some. I missed the Outdoorsy - original list doesn’t remotely scream Outdoorsy in the slightest to me though UNH can be, and URI has the option to be a FF, which is rare - Scranton, Stonehill, etc aren’t outsdoors to me. Also says wants bigger and wants a town and an airport (which took as easy access for them from MA). But that is way bigger, as I did say so maybe bad match. Northern MI university won’t be easy access, really to MA. Northwest MI College in Traverse City, which has minimal dorms, does have an airport WITH direct flights to Boston and is quite an outdoorsy area, and the college is in an adorable town, but tiny and basically a commuter school.

Thank you! Also says those students were ones who requested housing in June and July. So maybe that is why we never got wind of people having problems. If you planned to go there and registered on time you had housing. Thanks for the info - sorry to derail OPs thread.

We are in UTK country where housing is a huge issue so more kids are choosing ETSU to avoid that crush.

Back to OP’s question…

Not derailing - they like the school. Maybe having more info might change the mind or get it another look.

I don’t know UTCs housing situation. Here in Nashville, it’s very popular and fits like a glove based on the description. Heck b4 merit it’s less than $40k. the farthest North they fly is NYC so Chicago, Charlotte, Detroit, Chicago - it will be a one stop but most of these schools listed will be.

I live in Chattanooga but my kids have never really looked at UTC so I’m not super familiar but I do know it is growing. The popularity of UTK has had trickle down to the other schools but I have heard the dorms there are really nice. I haven’t heard of people unable to get housing but I hadn’t heard of it at ETSU either (though it does appear it was temporary at ETSU).

Yeah very popular here and obviously with the rock climbing and nature and across the walking bridge and boom - breakfast at Rembrandts. Plus the aquarium etc.

We don’t know OPs preference for housing other than on campus. My son changed schools literally because his first choice was tripling and moving some off and he went where he got his own dorm room and shared bath with one. It was a four plex - 4 bedrooms, 4 kids, two baths. But that was Honors. OP can research all. They may be fine in a double or triple.

UAH is another under $40k. They have the same - single rooms. I don’t know if there’s a qualifier like Honors to get. There is nature but not mountainous nature. Huntsville is growing and lots of airlines and flights but it will be a one stop to the Northeast.

Radford could be worth a look, given it’s in the mountains.

OP can look at all the housing for each school and see if it’s worth investigating. There’s likely student made videos on line too.

UTC’s website shows multiple properties with private bedrooms. They don’t list years allowed so no idea of first year can get. Looks like Radford is double occupancy - at least the 6 or 7 I looked at.

I’m guessing OP has enough schools to research I’m hoping they find another as the initial list doesn’t look very outdoorsy.

Thanks so much everyone. We cast a wide net that didn’t include all of his wants, as we weren’t sure where he would actually get in. We also thought smaller would be better but now he’s thinking potentially a larger school might work. He has ADHD and will need some accommodations so that was a factor in his list as well. BGSU has a great program for that, so that’s why it’s on the list, as do some of the others. He also has SUNY Plattsburgh and Siena (deferred) which would be close to skiing. Scranton also has a ski mountain very close by. As for housing, he’s a quiet kid so definitely does not want a single and even a triple or quad would be fine. Just don’t want him in a hotel for a month and then moved into a random dorm where he has no connections.

UNH and UVM are too expensive with his stats. Plus don’t think he’d get into UVM. We visited when we visited St Michaels and it just wasn’t his vibe. He’s outdoorsy, but more sporty than earthy crunchy.

Will definitely take a look at all these suggestions and open to any other ideas.

If skiing is in play, UTC, ETSU And Radford won’t work.

Someone upthread mentioned Marshall. It’s quiet. I don’t recall a college area but the city is decent size. It’s known for supports - which I think should be most important. Full pay is like $35k. Not sure if supports have a cost. I put a link below.

If you need skiing and think NY skiing is good or Scranton skiing, well Winterplace or Snow Shoe will work. The skiing by WCU is atrocious but it does exist. Winterplace in WV not much better but….

Another but maybe too expensive but known for supports is Marist. Notsure how much aid you might get but don’t forget, theese pricey schools need to discount to get butts in seat.

I would think support needs would trump all. So that might be a total game changer.

Good luck

I think AppState is very unlikely for a 2.8 OOS student. I’m in NC, FWIW. 97% of App State students have a GPA of 3.0 or better; 40% have above 3.99. You can look up the Common Data Set for schools you are thinking about. Section C has info on GPA, SAT/ACT etc. He might check out East Carolina. It’s not in the mountains but could be fun. UNC-Greensboro could work for him. Not super outdoorsy but it does have a nice college main drag. UNC-Asheville might work too. It’s in the mountains and would have the outdoorsy aspect. Asheville is a very fun and quirky city.

SUNY costs for out of state are about as reasonable as they come. Here are some special deals at a some SUNY’s:

SUNY Albany (undergrad enrollment: 12,000) has a tuition match program in which students from specified states pay the tuition and fees of their home state flagship. Massachusetts is one of those states, so you would pay the cost of in-state at UMass to attend this SUNY.

SUNY Cortland (undergrad enrollment: 6,000), about half an hour south of Syracuse, offers a Future New Yorker award up to $7500 in addition to the tuition match discount to out of state students.

SUNY Oneonta (undergrad enrollment: 4700), about an hour from skiing at Greek Peak resort and about 2 hours from Hunter and Wyndham Mountains, offers an $8000 future New Yorker award in addition to the tuition match discount to out of state students.

I was just about to suggest Ohio University in Athens, OH. Great college town, not really near an airport, but Columbus isn’t that far away.

West Virginia University and University of Kentucky are also worth considering. Agree that University of New Hampshire is worth a look see.

I know I’ve said it a million times on CC, but S23 LOVES Colorado State. As do we. Fort Collins is such a great college town and an easy shuttle ride from the airport.

if he wants something different than MA, it is such a great area with so much to do outdoors. If he is interested in majoring in anything that is housed in the Warner School of Natural Resources, I highly suggest taking a look. For an easy admit school, you won’t find a better place to major in what they offer.

We are from MA, too, so don’t hesitate to reach out for specific info. Oh, and since it’s a direct Jet Blue flight, we’ve been able to cover every flight with points from our Jet Blue card.

My kid is loving Central Michigan but the closest airport isnt huge (MBS). We are paying under 15k a year.

U of Minnesota Twin Cities is popular here. Western Michigan.

Funny I looked at it. OP won’t get merit but it didn’t show a close airport whereas Marquette (N Michigan too) did. For those with good grades on a budget, C M U really is a great option and your endorsements make it even better.

Just FYI, I think this means Central Michigan University. The CMU link takes you to Carnegie Mellon.

I didn’t know it links. I don’t know why some do. I’ll fix. Thx

University at Buffalo is a flagship, but Buffalo State is not
