favorite object essay

I know I’m suppose as long as it takes to fully express myself, but what kinds of length is Uchicago looking for in its favorite object essay? 500? 750? 1000? Some sort of general range would be greatly appreciated.

According to their own directions, the favorites essay is supposed to be a paragraph or two, but they don’t specify a word-count that you have to magically adhere to. As forum mainstays such as Unalove would attest, you should probably write enough to convey what you intend on conveying but leave out stuff that won’t add to your essay.

one more question - does it have to be my favorite book, movie, poem, etc or can it be something more creative?

The prompt says you can create a category of your own…

As long as you need it to be, as short as you can make it. Many longer essays can be made shorter and yet retain all their spice, or perhaps even add a little more to it. Really. Really really really.

And also, while you can be creative and ridiculous, you don’t have to be. I’m sure part of the fun of the admissions office is seeing how different applicants take a question and run with it-- in any direction.
