And so you are right! But you can still get the “tail” end of the season in summer…

And so you are right! But you can still get the “tail” end of the season in summer…

Our water is fine in NOLA. Some areas do have an egg taste water, like Slidell, across the lake. I have just recently learned of Crabby Jack’s, too. Second the elastic pants. You will go up a dress size while here. Enjoy and please check back with us when you return to let us know where you ate. I love working with out of town attorneys and living vicariously through them as to the great restaurants they’ve eaten at. Mat and Nattie’s were a recent recommendation from one. Near the Riverbend, not far from Tulane. I’ve also heard many recommendations for a place called Clancy’s near there, though never been. Thank you for visiting our fair city and I hope you have a great time!

Clancy’s is in a residential neighborhood, a bit hidden, and it’s great! I don’t think it fits the OP’s criteria but it will be there if he goes back.

Yep - the menu looks “nicer” than we will be doing for lunch when we are over closer to that area. Plus I think veal is another thing, like chicken livers, that the kid just won’t eat. He was kind of obsessed with turtles as a kid and doesn’t like artichoke so I think both soups are out for him as well, but I will eat the oyster artichoke and make dreamy faces while he has his gumbo.

Happy eating, saintfan!

(Note to self: do not look at this thread prior to heading home, or you will drool all over the bus. )

Waaahhh! This thread is not only making me hungry, but also pining the loss of my reason to visit as we had (DS moved to the other coast)

But wait, jym! Isn’t this thread enough reason in and of itself to visit? Forget the son and just go B-)

At some point I vow to go on a vacation that doesn’t involve a sports tournament or college visit. This could be your chance!

If u want to try all of NOLA’s illustrious restaurants all on one night, consider attending the Zoo to Do
Audubon Nature Institute | Celebrating the Wonders of Nature;

We used to do this charity event every year. Great fun! One year we even watched The Temptations sing “My Girl”.

It’s always the 1st weekend of May. So u have to decide btwn this or the Kentucky Derby.

Ha! Or opening day of boating season crew races depending on where you’re from ;)

First weekend in May is also JazzFest, so be warned about hotel availability then, too!

Actually, there’s a Chef’s Charity for Children, which benefits a local school for disabled kids, and it features food from Emeril, Andrea’s, and others. It’s usually held sometime in January.

Our local high schools have fundraisers every year, and this is how I’ve gotten to try Galatoires and Commanders and Antoines fancy dishes. Had turtle soup from all of them. Not a fan. But I do get the sherry!

We also have a picky eater in the family, so we don’t get to enjoy the NOLA food, except he does love Middendorf’s, so if you have a chance, try to take the boy there! He will probably find something he likes!

Ha! I wouldn’t call S picky. Right now he eats everything I know of except kale. He says he’s allowed to not like one vegetable and he draws the line at kale. Dang! I’m going to have to call him on that because when you throw in the artichoke that’s 2 veggies. I’m just speculating that the turtle, veal and livers wouldn’t go over. But . . . like pruning your college list, you have to find ways to narrow the field somehow.

@saintfan not sure how soon your trip is, but hope you and your son have a fabulous time and be sure to come back and let us know how it was. And where you ate!

Oh yes-- report back!

I will return to NOLA again sometime hopefully soon. Got to jazzfest this year- which was fab.

We are there the 13th thru 18th . . . thanks for thinking of it! I am busy planning now :P

I haven’t mapped out the food yet - I’ve been working on the entertainment and will see which neighborhoods we are in from there. We are doing the 2 hour kayak thing on Sunday evening and a 2 hour Treme walking tour that morning. The first second line of the season is supposed to be that afternoon (fingers crossed that it holds). The great good news is that the Stanton Moore Trio is playing at Snug Harbor Tuesday night and I have tickets!!

Kayaking? Where?

someone upthread recommended the Bayou St. John 2 hour evening kayak just to tool around and see houses and stuff. It launches from where Esplanade runs into city park

So how do you find out the parade start time? The club and date are listed on Gambit but not time. I’m assuming the route is similar to last year and originates at the home base.

Saintfan, that’s a very nice area. Enjoy!
