Favorite places to eat in NOLA

Visit update:

So our schedule was so packed with places that we had to be at specific times that food took a back seat. Here are some general observations:

Best thing ever: Second Line Parade hands down! We took a cap to the starting point and I had checked out the route on google maps to find a place just before the end to cut back to the main street safely. It was a perfect plan and the most amazing thing I’ve done in ages.

Our Treme walking tour was fantastic. It was a groupon thing and we went Sunday at 10am. Robin, out tour guide, was from the neighborhood and just gave us a 2 hour history lesson. There was just one other couple which was also nice. Saintkid and I agreed that it was time well spent and really informative.

Our 2 hour kayak was also fantastic. Sarah and Sonny, the operators, were really nice and competent and also had neat information and insight about the area and things in general. 3 of the other 5 paddlers were locals which made it fun.

Our location was perfect both for driving and walking around - we were just over into the Marigny from the French Quarter.

A po’ boy is really just a sandwich on French bread. I see now that people rate shops like one might compare 2 burger shacks but it is still a burger or sandwich at the end of the day (IMO)

New Orleans drivers are FANTASTIC!!! The city is super easy to navigate and the drivers are great - neither too aggressive nor too passive. Everything just flowed. I am a super fan of their turn pocket system.

We were so busy during the day that we would miss lunch then be starving at 4pm which is kind of between times for meals. We didn’t get to most of the places on the list. Mahoney’s was closed for renovation, The Grocery was closed on Sundays and after 4pm (both times that we were in the neighborhood and hungry). We did go to Joye K’s which was good but didn’t knock my socks off.

New Orleans Cake Café made a decent omelette but not good enough to go out our your way IMO.

I had a really good kale and roast beet salad with pear and feta at Nonna Mia in Esplanade Ridge - we had an evening where we were just not feeling fried foods and had drive by several times where it and another place were hopping. We sat out front on the porch and it was a very pleasant meal.

The best meal ever that I would walk across hot coals for was my smoked brisket sandwich at The Joint in the Bywater. Saintkid got a rib and brisket combo and the ribs were amazing as well. I will never look at BBQ the same. They were indescribably good. The smoked sweet corn grits were great as well. If you go to NOLA you MUST hit The Joint.

We loved having a car to see neighborhoods that were a bit off the beaten path. We were given a great tip of a park riverside of the zoo to gaze at the Mississippi without getting bogged down in all the tourist stuff.

I never got around to eating beignet so that debate will have to wait for another day. 3 days we ended up getting to-go boxes from the 24 hour bar across the street. They made a mean fried egg and bacon breakfast sandwich. Besides, seeing guys drink Mille High Life out of a plastic cup at 8am while you wait is a cultural experience.

I loved the sculpture garden at City Park. The first time I was there was mid afternoon just as it was about to storm. It was quiet and perfect. I visited the art museum there for something to do while Sainkid had an appointment - I didn’t feel like it was that great. I wouldn’t go out of my way for it.

I went up to Lake Pontchartrain several times - the promenade is really nice and it was neat to watch the weather come in from different directions. The lake is bigger than I pictured it.

lol, I had a feeling that was what would happen but I didn’t want to say anything. NOLA time runs different than the rest of the world and it’s wise to never make definitive plans.

Glad you made it to the second line. I know that was something you were looking forward to. The Fly is the park at the back of the Zoo, popular area for the Tulane and Loyola kids to hang out. There used to be a boat that went from The Fly to The Aquarium, it was a nice scenic trip.

Did you manage to catch any music> How was the school tour?

We were very glad not to be on one of the ubiquitous ghost tours. They were giant gaggles of people with loud, annoying guides. We figured that if there are ghosts they are much more recent that the ones featured in the tour. We saw lots of cemeteries in out driving but did not do a tour. The most moving moment was when the second line started and they do that half time side step with dirges past the cemetery - so almost a whole block - before breaking out in “I’ll Fly Away” - that was worth a thousand bus tours.

There are way too many ghost tours allowed to operate anymore. You can’t escape them walking the Quarter at night.

The clubs seemed to be carding really carefully. We asked our walking tour and kayak guides and they both didn’t think we would be able to get into Bullet’s with Saintkid so we didn’t try. The thing is video poker. They are OK with the alcohol but if there is gambling then the age is 21. Many places have a little kiosk which makes it OK I guess. Anyway . . . we didn’t push our luck.

Yep, my son has been kicked out of quite a few bars (with us) because of the video poker.

Saintkid can see himself there. The city really grew on him over time and Loyola has jumped up to tied for the top of the list I think.

Too late for the OP, but just saw a great episode of “No Reservations; NOLA”

UNO seems to be the top of the safety list now as well, so we can drop a few off the bottom.

Do lunch at Palace Cafe to save money. Get the stuffed artichoke and the white chocolate bread pudding. It’s on canal in the old Werlein’s building.

Crabmeat cheesecake is great at Palace Cafe!

So glad you discovered the Fly. The Mississippi River is amazing, and I am enjoying seeing it all over the country in my old age. Please feel free to contact me if you ever come back this way for tips on things to do. I spent the weekend traveling to New Roads and Marksville and saw sides of Louisiana that I never knew existed. Glad you also got to enjoy our beautiful Lake Pontchartrain. It sounds like y’all are appreciating the best side of our fair city.
