Favorite Podcasts??

@Anxiousmom1, you and I have similar tastes, but I could not get into Pop Culture Happy Hour. Tried 2 (that is my usual rule with a new one, to try a couple episodes), but they just seemed be… I dunno, trying too hard. My D1 likes it, but I just couldn’t get into it.

@collage1 & @garland, go for it! I like to listen while I fold laundry, do dishes & cook, put on makeup, walk for exercise, and commute. I’m not one to turn on much in the way of music or the radio (or TV) just for background noise, but since I can pick and choose these based on my mood and what I’m doing, I listen a lot. For example – I don’t listen to podcasts about books while I am driving (like What Should I Read Next – oh, geez, we should start a thread for that – 3 books you love, 1 book you hate, and recommendations on what to read next! Or some of the Bookriot podcasts). Anyway, if they talk about a book I want to read and I’m driving, I can’t write it down or put it into my phone. :frowning: So I only listen to book podcasts while I am doing something where it is easy to stop and do that. And I always listen to Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me on the way to work on Mondays because it gets me laughing on a Monday morning before I go to work.

Okay, dumb person question here: I have a limited shared data plan, so can’t just stream, and not a ton of memory in my phone. Need instructions for listening in the car: Go!

@garland - A typical podcast does not take up much memory, and can be deleted once you listen to it. Download it to your phone when you have access to wifi so you don’t use up any data.

If your car has Bluetooth connectivity, then you can pair your phone with your car’s system that way. If your car does not have Bluetooth, then you will need a cable to connect via whatever sort of audio input your car has.

If your car doesn’t have an audio input jack either, then just crank up the volume on your phone, and put it in the cup holder - lol.

@intparent, I don’t listen to What Should I Read Next very often, but I do follow Anne Bogel on her Modern Mrs. Darcy blog. I live in the same state and thought maybe it was a more regional podcast, but I guess not. If you like book recommendations, you might want to follow Bacon on the Bookshelf blog. It’s done by a young woman based in Nashville and she often features authors who are appearing in Nashville at Parnassus bookstore which is owned by Ann Patchett.

@garland, I don’t have unlimited data either, and also a small memory space. I’d suggest that you don’t “subscribe” to any to start with. Just start with 1-2 episodes. I now have some that I subscribe to, and some I check regularly to decide if I want to download a given episode (depends on the topic or guest, for example). Then I delete them as soon as I have listened (or if I decide not to finish one, I delete it then). If you don’t subscribe, then you can always control that you download just when you are on wi-fi.

For 8+ years I’ve been using podcasts as a sleep aid. And if I have trouble falling back asleep, a podcast usually does the trick. Keeps me from worrying.

I don’t have much memory on my phone, either, but my kids bought me an ipod Nano. I am not in love with the iTunes interface–it’s pretty cumbersome and not intuitive, but the iPod holds a ton of podcasts and is easy to stick in the pocket of my running shorts. I also don’t have to worry about dropping it or getting it wet like I would my phone. It is easier to download podcasts to an iPhone but easier to listen to them on an iPod.

My D is trying to get me to listen to Revisionist History. I told her I’d give it a try.

My regulars include (they are all sort of the equivalent of “beach reading” ):
Satellite Sisters
Milk Kitchen
I Hate My Boss (a newer podcast, about the work place - not negative, actually positive!)

I did enjoy the Richard Simmons series as @deb922 mentioned - super interesting.

The Guardian Football Weekly
Hardcore History
Men in Blazers
Miracle Nutrition with Hearty White
99% Invisible
2 Guys and a River
You Must Remember This

Thanks for all the advice, folks! We do have bluetooth in the car, though never hooked up. But also have a audio jack and cable. downloading and deleting sounds like a plan. thanks!

Lots of great ideas on this thread. Thanks!

I regularly listen to 1A, the WAMU show that replaced the Diane Rehm show. It is excellent.

I also listen to Code Switch, a show with a POC POV. It is very valuable, but sometimes I find it difficult, and sometimes I really would like to sit down for a long talk with the hosts. I would love to talk about it with other listeners here, especially POC, but I’m afraid that other people would intervene and such a thread would quickly be shut down. If you are a listener, please PM me and maybe we can talk about it.

I also listen to Fresh Air and the NPR Politics podcast.

I listen to various other NPR podcasts, notably Wait, wait, don’t tell me… and others.

I know I am late to the party
Here are some more (I don’t think they are duplicates) :

Mark Kermode and Simon Mayos film reviews (BBC)

Sawbones (a married couple -she is a physician explaining history and info of a certain disease or health fact and he discusses it with her in a silly way) Sometimes this one is a bit too silly for me.

You must remember this -stories of old Hollywood

Simon Mayo’s Confessions -people write in with embarrassing or wrong things they have done (very light -nothing scary)

Revisionist History
James Altucher
Tim Ferris
The Minimalists
NPR’s How I built this
Ted Talks

To name a few.

@abasket , if you are going to listen to Revisionist History and you are interested in higher education (which of course you are, you’re here on CC!), you really should listen to the 3 in the middle of the series, Food Fight, Carlos doesn’t Remember, and My little 100 million (or something like that! ) All very topical and helpful in framing some big, important questions it’s easy to lose sight of if you are in or near the college ptocess.

I subscribe to a lot of podcasts. Above is a partial list. Obviously, I do not get around to all of them. A friend of mine tells me this list of podcast reveals I do not have a sense of humor. (Her podcast list is filled almost exclusively with comedy).

I also listen to audiobooks through Audible.

This American Life
The Moth

There is a whole category of podcasts that I don’t think has been mentioned. These are the “aftershow” podcasts where an episode of a tv drama is discussed. For the popular shows like Game of Thrones you will probably find a dozen different podcasts made by different people. You can pick the hosts and style you like best. It can be nice to listen to these discussions because you might have missed something. It can also be fun to hear people speculate on what could come next in the show. (This is how I got started on podcasts in the first place – listening to discussions about the show, Lost.)

Has anyone tried “Freak Out and Carry On” ?

I enjoy food/kitchen/nutrition podcasts. Last night after hearing an interview I downloaded Radio Cherry Bombe - a podcast that focuses on women/women chefs in the food business. Anyone listen before?
