Oops. Wrong thread.
Just back from a Europe trip- Apple Pay on the IPhone was great. No need to have a lot of Euros and no need to pull out the credit card. Worked everywhere in Portugal, Spain and France including the taxis.
My daughter mentioned using this all over Europe as well - loved just being able to tap her phone. She wishes the U.S. had wider use of Apple Pay.
Lots of Apple Pay in my area. Sometimes I decide go out with just my car keys and cellphone. (In CO we have a way to have driver’s license on phone; medical card in Apple wallet). The exceptions I can think of are Walmart/Sams (our Costco does accept Apple Pay), Home Depot, and many of the farmer’s market vendors (a few use Square).
Lots of Apple pay in my area too (Southern California).
No Apple Pay at Home Depot.
Any tips on getting over jet lag?
Keep your regular bedtime and wake up time. Lots of water. Warm shower before heading immediately to bed. No sugar products. No liquor. No processed foods. Really. I don’t think I’ve experienced jet lag since adopting these.
spend time outside in natural light.
If it is daytime where you arrived, go outside and spend as much time outside in the daylight as possible. It always works for me! Sunlight definitely helps with clock reset! And a glass of good wine to top it off! If you arrive at night, try to get as much sunlight exposure as possible the next day.
I didn’t have an issue going but coming home has been hard. I can’t keep my eyes open past 7:30. Made it till 9 tonight so hope im on my way.
Regardless of where I’ve traveled I always get that - I call it post-travel downer - I think it’s a real thing.
I just try to immediately adjust to the time zone, even when it means hardly any sleep at all upon arrival after a red eye flight. It’s been working pretty well.
Agree with avoiding alcohol and sugar.
For me the best way to combat jet lag is to arrive at your destination at late dinner time local time. (Try not to sleep on your flights! )
This gives you a chance to get settled in your lodging, get a bite to eat and maybe go for a short exploratory walk. Then drift off listening to a book on tape (or the late night tv monologues?). I find having to concentrate on listening to something (no screens!) really helps me to relax when i would otherwise be too excited or overtired to fall asleep. If that’s not working, then I would take half a dose of an over the counter sleep aid…enough to help me fall asleep, but not enough to make me feel like a beached whale in the morning. If there is any chance of loud city noises or headlights disturbing you then definitely ear plugs and a mask!
Do this and wake up fresh and ready to go in the morning.
We find that flying east-to-west, the problem is staying awake. Going west-to-eat, the problem is going to sleep. Has to do with either gaining or losing hours due to time zone changes.
I agree 1000%—as soon as you arrive, don’t think about what time it is where you left—immediately start living on local time.
So much this! We’re in MST but going +9 hours to Europe we don’t really have a problem and we’ve done red eyes getting in at 6am and afternoon flights.
But coming back for at least two weeks we’re going to bed at 8pm and waking up at 3am!
Anyway, on the plane don’t drink alcohol and stay hydrated. Try to take a walk and explore at least a little bit the day you land, and get plenty of sun exposure. If it doesn’t break the bank, business class it’s a lifesaver, and the 787 Dreamliner is awesome if you have a choice of aircraft. Leading up the trip we try to time-shift our schedules at least 1-2 hours ahead, e.g. going to bed at 10pm instead of 11pm.
My new favorite travel tip - Flexibility is your friend
I’ve been inching closer to my Europe trip since last August. I’ve had my heart set on a train from Milan to Paris, during daylight - I don’t mind catching a 6 am train - found one that went through Zurich, because the direct was cancelled due to a landslide. Went to buy my ticket yesterday (I prefer all my “musts” be purchased in advance), and even though they were there Friday, yesterday they were nowhere to be found. Oh, cancelled due to rail repairs (mind you this is for Sept). I was so looking forward to it. My D said try through Geneva. Nope. Turin. Nope. Just not gonna happen. Oh well, I’ll fly to meet my friend. It’s fine, just a reminder…flexibility is your friend!
Are you sure about the train through Geneva? We just went from France to Italy via Geneva by train. The only snag was that we couldn’t book the tickets until we were 2 months in advance of the trip because of the Italian leg of the trip.
The train site I’m using says the rail will be closed starting Aug 19th (I think was the start date) and the end date was past my travel date (Sept 5).
I haven’t fully given up. I think I may have found a convoluted 4 transfer journey - it won’t get into Paris until around 7:30. My friend and I were talking about meeting around 5. I’ll wait until their flight is booked to see if that holds. They’re planning to do that in the next day.
Good thing I’m a whiz at excel spreadsheets because this may need one!
That’s a bummer! I hope you can make the logistics work!
