If you have a Vitamix blender, do you have favorite recipes that you make over and over? I know there are thousands out there, but I’m looking for a few of your favorites to get me started. Thanks!
We tried to always have some fresh spinach and plain Greek yogurt in the house as a base, then add other stuff that we had around. That varied on what we had in stock in frozen fruit from Costco. Regarding bananas, I’d buy a bunch at Costco, peel them, cut them in half, and put them on a baking tray in the freezer. Once they were frozen, I’d store them in a freezer bag. I could be perfectly fine with just fruit, especially berries.
A couple of months ago we put our house on the market so the Vitamix had to go down in the cabinet. I think it’s been used once since then. Looking forward to getting it back out at the new place. I know some people use peanut butter, oatmeal, etc. I also keep some chia seeds and flax seeds around that I’ll throw in from time to time to add to the nutrition.
Every morning I make a smoothie: yogurt, frozen fruit, protein powder.
I also make a lot of puréed soups. One is: Simmer potatoes, tomatoes, onions, leeks, carrots in broth, then purée. Add frozen corn if you like for additional taste and texture.
Cheater’s hollandaise: blend melted butter, eggs, lemon juice. Pour mixture into microwave-safe bowl, microwave 15 seconds at a time, stirring each time, until thick. Technique works for any egg-thickened sauce.
Beef pot roast with gravy: simmer beef and potatoes in mixture of wine and tomatoes. Pull out some of the potatoes and most of the liquid and blend those together, then pour back over pot roast. (This avoids flour as thickener.)
@dmd77 - what kind of protein powder do you use? Someone gave me some one time to add to my smoothie, and it gave it a gritty texture.
Almond butter, hummus, flour from fancy grains and seeds, black bean “fudge.”
@teriwtt – protein powders vary enormously, and I’ve found some that taste like sugary chalk and some that I like. I refuse to eat artificial sweeteners (and avoid even natural sugars) so it’s been a long search. I went to Whole Foods and tried packets of many of them. My favorite is Original Blubonnet Whey protein. It tastes kind of like unsweetened marshmallows, surprisingly. No sweeteners of any kind. Lots of them have stevia. Bob’s Red Mill recently introduced a protein drink with natural sweeteners that is a bit gritty but tastes really good–it’s vegan as well. The cheapest place I’ve found to buy protein powder is Amazon, once I found one I like. (I use a kilogram a month.)
Yes, it made it chalky, which I didn’t like. I don’t care about it having sugar or not because my fruit provides enough sweetness. The one that someone gave me to try was a pea protein as opposed to whey (maybe it had a vanilla flavor). But it had that icky texture, so I’m trying to avoid going through every protein powder out there if possible to find one that is tolerable.
Teri, I like the Now Sports natural whey protein isolate powder - it is unflavored and unsweetened. I can eat it out of the jar. Amazon sells a 1.2 lb jar for $20, I believe.
@BunsenBurner do you add it to food? or do you eat it plain?
lol…out of the jar?? really?
My H is a protein powder junkie…seriously. Everytime we’re in Sams or Costo, he buys a big ole bag. I would like to find one that can be used “hidden” in foods.
I need to use my Vitamix more often. I kind of forget that I have it.
Of course I add it to food. But I do not need any artificial flavoring or sweeteners to make it palatable, so it os edible by itself. I much prefer the taste of unflavored powder. I can definitely eat it on its own, lol, but if added to other foods (oatmeal, yogurt, etc.) it does not alter the taste of them.
Thanks @Bunsenburner. I was searching for a recommendation on protein powders.
Banana Berry Blast smoothie from the book “Simple Green Smoothies”
2 cups spinach
2 cups almond milk (unsweetened)
2 cups of your favorite berry
2 small bananas
Blend spinach and almond milk until smooth. Then add berries and bananas and blend again. Serves 2.
I have a Blendtec, and I make smoothies for DS almost every day. I start with almond milk or regular milk, add Chia seeds or hemp hearts, almond or peanut butter, baby spinach or frozen kale or chard stems (when I make chard I put the stems in a baggie in the freezer), a banana (fresh or frozen), and frozen fruit (strawberries, cherries, blueberries, peaches, or mango).
