FCL Leadership Conference (Free!)

Hey CCers!

I work for a nonprofit, Future Civic Leaders, that runs a free (yes, free!) Leadership Conference in DC each summer. This is not your typical expensive conference, its a completely free program that is non-partisan and paid for by donors and grants. Yes, this means its more competitive, but the quality of the program is amazing.

I’m here to answer any questions you have. You can read more and apply at Summer.FutureCivicLeaders.org

Below is a description:
Future Civic Leaders 2010
Have you ever wanted to run your own campaign for congress? This conference will give you that chance! All participants will be split into small teams. You will take a role such as candidate or campaign manager, and spend the conference making sure that your candidate gets elected. Instead of just listening to speakers, you will be advised by real political operatives. For example, on the day when the you have to write speeches, a white house speechwriter will come and talk about speechwriting, and when you have to work on fundraising, lobbyists and fundraisers will discuss how to set a budget. Confirmed speakers so far include CNN’s Ed Henry, and Congressman Jared Polis with many more to be announced. Students who are low-income, lower-middle class, or otherwise disadvantaged are invited to apply.

The campaign is not just a fun simulation, but an avenue for active learning! The conference will culminate in an “election night celebration” where results will be announced and you will celebrate your accomplishments and dance the night away! Spend four days of your summer at this free, fun, and exciting leadership camp!
The application for the 2010 Leadership Conference is now online! The application is due May 15th and admissions are rolling. So the sooner you apply, the better your chances are.

This looks awesome. I’ve already got plans for the summer so I won’t be applying (unfortunately) but I know a few people who would definitely be interested (and who don’t prowl this site) that I’ll pass this onto.

Thanks :D.

What income group are you mainly focusing on? Under 75K?

@moodragonx- Thanks so much! Much appreciated. Apply if your summer plans change!

@gotmilklol- Our income threshold is 55k for a family of 2, with an additional $5.5k allowance for each additional household member. If you apply and you need to note additional household members just reply to the confirmation email with that information. Family income is self-reported with random applicants being asked to submit tax returns. The limits are fairly strict because it is one of the very, very few free DC programs. Even most other nonprofit programs charge a lot!

Also, we will be announcing more speakers in late May! Expect to see a lot of names you will recognize from TV!

@gotmilklol- Check your PMs

All of yesterday’s PMs are now answered.

Accepted! I’m very excited haha
