FDA proposes nicotine limit of 0.7mg per gram of tobacco in cigarettes

The proposed limit of 0.7mg per gram of tobacco is much lower than the typical 18-20mg per gram of tobacco. The intent is to greatly reduce the tendency of addiction, so that those who start smoking can more easily quit, and those already addicted are more likely to quit or switch to less harmful means of satisfying their nicotine addiction.

It sounds like a good idea, but I wonder if it will just push more people to vaping. I admit that I don’t know much about vaping, so maybe that’s a dumb question?

If enacted, it probably will, and that may be part of the intent, in that vaping, while unhealthy, is likely less unhealthy than smoking. Vaping is also somewhat less obnoxious to others than smoking, although it is obnoxious enough that places that do not allow smoking also tend not to allow vaping.

I.e. the FDA ideally would like smokers to quit completely, but appears to consider vaping and other forms of nicotine delivery to be less bad than smoking.

Doubt it goes through. But if it does, I own two tobacco stocks. Maybe time to cash them out !!

You also have huge municipal bonds that would suffer as many states issues them tied to payments that the cigarette manufacturers make to them based on sales volume.

Long story short, this won’t be helpful to the economy or to states so it’s likely something that won’t see implementation.

Vaping is often sold at a much higher concentration and the health risks are huge from vaping especially since there is very little control over what is added to the “vape juice” and it’s causing problems with the hazardous disposal of the batteries and all the other parts. It’s claimed to be safer but studies have NOT shown that.
