February Letter

I’m starting to work on an “update” letter for Yale to follow up on my deferral. Does anyone have advice for what I should include besides: Why/First choice/what I’ve been doing since I applied early? Does anyone have some sort of template for this kind of letter? I’m concerned about being too “braggy,” i.e. saying I did this since then, and I did this, I, I, I blah blah blah or missing some important things I should address/focus on. Thanks.

It’s OK to state the facts: things you’ve accomplished, grades received, since you sent your application. It sounds like you are worried about the tone of your letter. This might be a good piece to run by a writer you trust. Maybe your AP English teacher. This person can make sure you come across as accomplished, sincere, clearly a member of the 2013 class, yet humble :)

If you you have earned new awards/honors since submitting your application originally, it’s fine to send Yale a letter listing and briefly describing each of your accomplishments, and closing by reiterating that Yale remains your first choice. Keep it short, sweet, and to the point.
