I watched the news conference- some kids definitely knew. They would show up for the sport team and say they were injured or go to a few practices/meetings then disappear.
The rep at the press conference noted that due to the recent timeframe of the investigation, he was comfortable saying that most of the kids involved were actually currently undergraduates, not graduated.
I don’t buy that ALL of these kids had no idea what was going on. Privilege and entitlement starts early in life with these types of people. While the manipulation may not be explicitly laid bare, certain outcomes are expected.
Whether they knew or not, these are the type of kids who were born on third and go through life thinking they hit a triple.
With some of these enormous amounts paid, why not just hire some great tutors/college prep people, or as others have mentioned, pay their way in the old fashioned way? All the ruse and subterfuge on the parents’ parts seems especially unnecessary.
Lori Loughlin’s daughter seems particularly vapid anyway, and in one of her YouTube videos, mentioned only wanting to go to college for the partying and tailgating experience. Why not just buy her an apartment close to campus and let her be the socialite/trust fund baby she wants to be?
Well there is evidence of a student being on the call with this guy and her dad deciding on the college… in some cases the parents did not want their kids to know… sorry even if they didn’t know it’s fraud! Parents are paying the tuition… they should be asked to leave… plus PSAT to Sat score jump of 400 and they did not suspect?
Ok. But someone had to tell them st some point. Someone had to doctor resumes and ex sheets. Administrators talk to incoming athletes. Spots are lost on the team and questions are asked. You have to drop the sport once you arrive.
And it’s not like the coach says admit Emily and the entire admissions team says sure. Especially that late in the game. There’s no coaching vacuum. Questions are asked and apps are reviewed.
The wrong doing was done by the parents, but if it can be proven the kid was in on it he or she should be expelled from the college. Per the press conference, many are still in attendance.
Just because a child grows up in a rich household, doesn’t mean its not also an abusive environment. To me, any home where parents would commit actual fraud rather than see their child attend an unworthy school is an abusive environment. These kids were either coddled so much they never had the chance to develop or grew up knowing they could never be good enough.
None of these kids “needed” a highly selective school to get a start in life, or in business or anywhere else. They already had all the connections. There was no need for this. This is pure, abusive vanity.
Lori Loughlin’s daughter, Olivia Jade, only wanted to go to college to party anyway. You can google and see articles. All that cheating and law breaking just so a spoiled rich girl could experience college parties.
There may be other schools involved and more indictments once the FBI has access to the records of the Edge College and Career Network LLC and the Key Worldwide Foundation.
The Feds know how to get guilty pleas. One tactic is to inform the parents’ attorneys that their kids are unindicted co-conspirators, and, that if the parent elects to fight the charge in court, then their child will be indicted as a co-conspirator. If the parent enters a plea of guilty, then the child (whether innocent or not) will not be indicted.
And yes, federal prosecutors can charge innocent individuals as they enjoy near total immunity for their official actions.
