Feds uncover admissions test cheating plot

Because there were many complaints about the doctor from students and staff and USC did nothing! If USC was getting complaints about the bribe-taking employees here, and ignored those complaints, then USC would be on the hook. But we’ve seen no evidence that USC was informed.

“The one thing they get is extra time on those stupid standardized tests.”

I’m not sure I would call standardized tests “stupid” just because some kids might not perform as well on them as other test takers. Performing tasks under pressure / time constraints is an important skill set to have for a student and a professional. Standardized tests are not perfect but IMO I don’t think they are “stupid” by any means.

@lostinsearch @lindagaf There seems to be one Northeastern applicant/student implicated, but was maybe just admitted and didn’t attend (but parents still paid)

Here is an interesting subplot I have just unearthed about John B. Wilson’s son named Johnny Wilson. He indeed did play water polo at Menlo School, Atherton, CA, but it turns out there was another water polo player at that same high school named John D. Wilson, who was a goalie. Both were seniors in the 2013-2014 season, as shown here:

[Link to maxpreps.com](Roster - Menlo School Knights (Atherton, CA) Boys Varsity Water Polo 13-14)

Now John D. Wilson was an extremely talented goalie, who was selected to second team, all-conference (in one of the strongest water polo conferences in the nation), as shown here:

http://www.waterpoloplanet.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=10295

John D. Wilson ended up being recruited by and playing for Johns Hopkins, while Johnny Wilson ended up going to USC, where his name is listed on the roster for his freshman year as a driver (in other words, he was not a goalie):

https://usctrojans.com/roster.aspx?roster=173
https://usctrojans.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4711

The problem is that his bio for the team is patently false because it appropriates the accomplishments of the other Wilson kid. His bio says that he “was an all-league first team senior out of Menlo School in Atherton, Calif… Also named to the 2013 All-Central Coast Section Division II second team… As a junior, earned All-Daily News and All-CCS honorable mention.” But these were all honors given to John D. Wilson and not Johnny Wilson. The USC coach simply exploited the name similarity to falsify a bio for Johnny Wilson.

Now, Johnny Wilson certainly had to have looked up his own bio on the USC water polo team, and he must have not taken the trouble to have his record corrected, so he appears to be complicit in this scheme.

Northwestern is involved.

@Lindagaf A link was posted to the court document that showed that one set of faked test scores were sent to Northeastern, BU and BC but the student did not attend any of them.

Then there is that situation linked above. When all is said and done most top 50 schools will likely be at least mentioned.

Ok, thanks @Mwfan1921 and @TomSrOfBoston .

All sorts of test beyond those mandated by the state were also administered to my kids. For example, they were given test for entrance into G & T programs and additional test for placement in advanced math programs etc. It was endless.

Northwestern is involved because some of the parents who bribed and cheated are Northwestern alums? That doesn’t count as “involvement” to me.

@“Cardinal Fang” - from the story: The parents of a Northwestern student were charged earlier this week in a $25 million cheating and bribing scheme that facilitated college admissions for wealthy students.

Manuel and Elizabeth Henriquez, who live in Atherton, California, were accused of paying for a proctor to help their two daughters cheat on college entrance exams and conspiring to bribe the head tennis coach at Georgetown University, according to federal prosecutors in Boston.

The elder daughter is a student at Georgetown, according to legal documents. The Henriquezes are listed in Northwestern records as parents of an NU student. The University, which is not named in the affidavit, would not confirm the student’s name.

@socaldad2002
Agree with you. I believe most good students, are good standardized test takers too; though the reverse might not be true, good standardized test takers don’t always translate into good/curious learners.

In wake of admissions scandal, USC needs to fire athletic director Lynn Swann

https://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-usc-swann-admissions-corruption-20190313-story.html

@“Cardinal Fang” The local Evanston paper said there is freshman student:

“The student’s parents, Manuel and Elizabeth Henriquez, planned to pay as much as $80,000 to a college prep company to help their daughter cheat twice on the ACT and on three SAT subject tests, according to a federal complaint unsealed on Tuesday”.

They helped their older daughter cheat and get into Georgetown…

Saw this article about Mark Riddell that I didn’t even finish. “He is just a really smart guy”… 36 years old who took tests for teenagers for money and knowing that he is cheating?? His only career is cheating on a test which he first took 20 years ago?!

I think a lot of the kids frequenting CC can get high scores or scores on demand. The only difference…someone knows the right from wrong!!

“The Yale Dad Who Set Off the College-Admissions Scandal”

"The original tipster who led federal authorities to the biggest college-admissions scam they’ve ever prosecuted was Morrie Tobin, a Los Angeles resident who was being investigated in a securities fraud case, according to a person familiar with the investigation.

Mr. Tobin was being questioned in an alleged pump-and-dump investment scheme—in which people conspire to inflate the price of a stock so they can sell it at a profit—when he offered a tip to federal authorities in an effort to obtain leniency, according to people familiar with the matter…"

And now we have someone suing Yale over this because it rejected her and she was forced to go to…Stanford: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2019/03/14/southern-california-yale-colleges-stanford-students-class-action/3160526002/

Update: it sounds like at least one may be withdrawing from the lawsuit based on the ridicule she attracted. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/college-cheating-scandal-first-lawsuits-filed-students-elite-schools-n983211

Thanks for the link, @momofsenior1. Both Henriquez daughters should quickly withdraw from their schools . Then their parents should hire @hanna to find a school that will overlook their cheating.

@menloparkmom , just wow!

Well at least their kids can’t complain about one being favored over the other.

I just looked at the latest USN engineering ranking and notice USC is ranked 9th overall, ahead of Cornell, but it doesn’t have a single engineering department ranked in the top-10. This is pretty strange. As a former engineer, I never thought they would be anywhere close to being in the top-10. Someone may want to take a closer look at the numbers they reported. It just doesn’t smell right.
