• (I usually don’t count this because I was young when it happened, but I thought I’d just say it) won 1st place at the provincial science fair and went on to nationals where I won 3rd place in my category. It was only in grade 7 though. I’m looking to do another project in grade 11, but we’ll see

I’m also looking to do a trip abroad to India in the summer going into grade 12 and learn about health care. And as of right now am apply for a hospital volunteer position. What are my chances at HYPS? Right now I’m afraid my extra currics are all over the place, but I’ve been doing a lot of these things for many years and I would say I’m most passionate about volunteering with kids, dancing, and ceramics. However, I won’t ever get any tangible recognition for dancing, is it worth pursuing it because I really enjoy it? I’m also worried that because I’m applying from Canada and most likely for financial aid my chances will be slimmer. I’d love to get another opinion and thanks for taking the time to read this.

…nothing?

Hard to say anything without scores. Don’t worry about it so early on. Just do your best. Sounds like you’re well on your way, but you are international so…

racially im like born in Canada, but my parents are from East Africa. I’m a Muslim but my ancestors are probably Indian. For the common app is it like allowed for me to put down African to increase my chances? Otherwise I’d probably jsut put white (middle eastern)

Okay, look at it this way: if someone saw you on the street, what would they think you are? African or Indian? That’s what you should put down. Don’t misrepresent yourself; what if you get offered an interview, and they expect to see someone along the lines of African American but instead you show up and are obviously Indian? Rejection. You’re international anyways, so don’t worry too much about your race–it’s not going to make a substantial difference to be honest.

Are you Egyptian?

it’s hard to explain what I am. I’ll probably go with white (middle eastern) then. It’s closest to what I am. Also do universities take into account that in Canada we dont have organizations like FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) or NHS (National Honor Society), we don’t “letter” in varsity sports (I still don’t know what that means), and our system is jsut genreally different. Will HYPS expect us to have similar accomplishments to Americans?

HYPS could care less about membership in FBLA and similar clubs. What they want is exceptional achievement outside of the classroom, and there is plenty of opportunity for that in Canada.

No one can tell you anything now. Get top grades and scores and pursue your passions for any shot at these schools.

hmmm, okay that makes me feel better. So I do a lot of things where I can get tangible recognition, but for something like bollywood dancing. I love it and I’m pretty good at it considering I’m the only guy in the program. however, i dont think i could ever get any formal achievements, is it still worth pursuing because I enjoy it so much? And if i do is it worth recording on a university application?
