I’m 20 years old and currently attending John Jay CC. My first college was Purdue University and I major in IT. The first semester I managed to land a 3.0. Unfortunately, the second semester was when things began to shift. My parents began to struggle financially and on top of that one of my younger brothers was hired to work on tour with Lion King. This meant I had to juggle between classes, split wrangling my younger brother with my father in different states, and I was working for the IT department in the math building as well as an Owen Hall representative. My gpa fell to a whopping 2.04 after getting 4 C’s and a F.

I ended up transferring to SUNY Delhi for the fall of '13 with hopes that being closer to home would allow me to help my parents and five younger brothers out better. Again I grabbed the 3.0, even with juggling classes and still wrangling my brother on tour (flying out of state a lot of weekends and missing some classes here and there ). While wrangling I did get busy networking and picking up small side gigs and volunteering whenever I could so I that I did not fall into idleness. I actually have quite a list of things that I have done while travelling.

Unfortunately, my father got into a car accident and I had to transfer to John Jay to make things easier on my mother. The transferring process was absolutely terrible . It was literally last minute and I ended up getting put into classes that had NOTHING to do with my major. In fact, most of the credits I had transferred only counted as electives when it came to IT in John Jay due to the fact that they special in Criminal Justice, a different branch of IT/Information Systems apparently. Long story short, juggling wrangling again, babysitting, as well as dealing with the separation of my parents has had a toll on my grades. I received 2 C’s, D- and a WU ( Unofficial Withdrawal ), placing me on academic probation. The WU factors in as a F/0, which made no sense to me as it was the one class that genuinely had my interest. I took all the tests, and did all his assignments and attended consistently. I have yet to get a response from the professor in terms of why received a WU but it may be too late now to matter. Again i was wrangling and just got back recently from Chautauqua and Cali.

I know for a fact John Jay is not the school for me, but I feel like I just got trapped in. I spoke to my parents already and established that I can no longer keep putting them and my younger brothers first. This is MY future and I have to get back on track. I have to make sure that I’m happy first before I can tend to anybody else.

If the WU doesn’t change, should I just do another semester at John Jay and get off Academic probation and then transfer? Can I still transfer to another 4 year university even if I am under academic probation? I was considering taking the semester off to work at an internship and research suitable schools while I do so, is that a good idea? Should I attempt a last minute transfer based on rolling admissions? I really do feel lost and would like some peoples take on options that I should consider. I apologize for the extra long post.
