Fellow Applications - How's everyone doing?

There’s something in informed delivery from Elon today??? It’s just a regular size envelope so I’m awfully nervous for my D!!! It’s from admissions and financial aid, but we didn’t apply for financial aid. Is this clearly a rejection to the fellows programs or do the interview invites come in small, bill size envelopes? Does anyone have experience with this or does anyone else show a letter in informed delivery??? I’m dying here!!!

@mamawitch I would be very surprised if it is about the Fellows applications at all. I don’t know anything about informed delivery … does it include all mail or just trackable mail? My kid is still getting mail from schools she has been accepted to bc she hasn’t said “yes” to any of them. Trying to remember last mail from Elon, but can’t. From past posts, I believe all notifications will be done through the portal and/or email, not snail mail. Obviously, I don’t know for sure. Notifcation day is Feb 1 which is a Saturday; not sure if that means it will be that Friday or not. I’m really nervous for my kid, too. But I wouldn’t worry about this one!

@onemoremom12 Informed delivery sends you an email with scanned pictures of most of your mail. It doesn’t get everything like flyers and the big acceptance envelopes. But this is just a regular bill sized envelope. I was thinking it was way too early too, but my mind went straight to them quickly weeding her out of the applicant pool!! Figured I’d check here to see if anyone else got mail from them today.

@mamawitch It’s hard being a mom!! :smiley:

@onemoremom12 It was a letter from her admissions counselor welcoming her to Elon and giving her the dates for their admitted student days. ?

We got two letters today:

  1. Letter envelope from regional Admissions counselor - official congrats admission.
  2. Letter from president (8x11 envelope) explaining their lower costs, with a brochure about Elon opportunities.

Actually made me wonder if these are in lieu of Fellows…but then letter was dated 1/14, which is the day before Fellows applications were due, so I think no correlation. Just an official admission letter.

I wish they would be more clear about the J-term (January term)…I see on Faceblook photos from all over the world. Costs? Choices? Course credits? Timeframes?

S20 got one of these today too. Along with some Elon stickers.
He ended up not applying for Fellows and Scholars. He was too overwhelmed finishing other RD applications, and some school assignments, and he wasn’t sure what to apply for. I was kind of sad about that when we received the form letter today, like it went out to the “losers” who didn’t apply for the extra program. Too bad he can’t do it now that he has more bandwidth.

Does anyone know if there are honors type programs one can apply to after already at Elon? Like for sophomore year?

@Timeflies2 My D did the same. It was end of term and she had RD apps due so she skipped the Fellows application. She was also confused on which one(s) to apply to sos he didn’t do any. Wish she had as it would have made it more in line with her other schools cost-wise but who knows if she would have been selected anyways. I think it’s only 50 kids per program. The timing on the applications is just not good.

@sunnyschool Im no an expert by any means abut we just recently toured Elon . The January term is 3 weeks and students either take 1 class or go abroad to take a class. As far as cost I think the cost is included in tuition except if you travel may be extra. You go back early in Jan and have a few days off after term ends. The college I attended had this And it was always fun and good to be able to take just 1 class.

Hi all! Mom of freshman Elon student. He applied for Fellows (very reluctantly LOL and last minute) and was not invited to interview. As I recall, this information came to him in an email; I don’t think I knew it was coming. He also got stickers and stuff at some point, and I really don’t think it had anything to do with applying/not applying/not being selected for Fellows interviews. PS Please don’t be discouraged…he did NOT give it his best shot!

There is no “lateral entry” to Fellows for sophomore year. And I should say that my son doesn’t regret not getting into Fellows at all…this is a mom thing for me! He’s very happy and satisfied and challenged.

J term is 3 weeks, with class 3 hours per day. This year it is from 1/3 to 1/23. Then a full week break. The cost to take a class is included in fall tuition. I believe that over 90% of students participate (either in class, or a study abroad, which would be extra $, or also I believe some Fellows groups or possibly even majors…think I’ve seen dance…take other short trips). You can take one class during J term. From what I hear many freshman had trouble getting their desired picks, but that’s part of being a freshman. Some take fun classes (like an art), some get a hard one out of the way.

Good luck to all with Fellows, or not as the case may be!

@mamawitch She had already been admitted, right? Interesting … these schools really pour it on! My D got a POSTER that had a quote from her essay from one of the schools where she’s been accepted (not Elon). At some point she was asked for her t-shirt size for Elon - did you guys get that, too??

@sunnyschool From the Elon website:

Students may take up to four (4) hours during winter term with no additional tuition charged, provided that the student is full-time during fall semester. Students who take a winter term course but were not full-time during the fall semester will be charged an hourly rate per credit hour of $1,149.00 Students participating in winter abroad will have separate trip costs charged to them. If a student is full-time for the following spring semester, then the full amount of the winter tuition (up to four hours) is credited to the student account.

Also Fellows applicants, FYI, there are limited hotels close to Elon and they fill up quickly. There are plenty further out (15-20 min). I don’t know if Fellows Weekend hotels fill up but they probably do like everything else! Could be worth it to make a refundable reservation for Fellows Weekend! And if your student ends up committing, make your move in (and Family Weekend if you want to go) reservations early!

@TS0104 As always, thank you for your insight! The new Inn at Elon was not filled up for Fellows weekend the last I looked!

@onemoremom12 Yes, she had already been accepted. The rational me knew it couldn’t have been a fellows letter, but the irrational decision time me went straight to a quick weed out letter!! ? Not sure how many they ask to come interview. I do know there are only 25 students in the teaching fellows. And an invite to that is a huge deciding factor for my D.

Just for fun…which fellows programs did your kiddos all apply to?

Mine did Teaching and Honors.

@onemoremom12 I don’t remember being asked for tshirt size…hmmm…I do hope they get a tshirt at Fellows weekend!
It’s an expensive trip to interview…
I truly wish they would just give additional merit and we would make a decision. This is very stressful for the students. And if he doesn’t get the Fellows invite, that may negatively impact his decision to attend. I wish they understood that they are adding to stress on the families.

@mamawitch Mine applied for Honors and Business.

@sunnyschool I wish there was more pure merit, as well. Only $6000 or less for pure merit is limiting. I see these interviews as much more about kids’ fit into the program(s) more than who is deserving of merit. For that, the interviews make sense, in my opinion.

I will be traveling with D to a different school in a few weeks for a second round of merit scholarship interviews. Hopefully we’ll travel to Elon in March. Then there’s a third school that we’re hoping she gets invited to for scholarship weekend.

Lucky for me, my D and I have a blast when we travel together and we’ve been able to find relatively cheap ways to travel. But it certainly adds up. She gave up her sport this year so I keep reminding myself that by doing so, there’s “found” money … ha! More justifying on my part!! :smiley:

@mamawitch So today a snail mail letter came for my daughter from Elon and … being the mom … I immediately panicked. Then I remembered your post and my reassurances to you. HA! She’s not home to open, but I am assuming it is similar to what you got. She also got her t-shirt. She’ll be thrilled. I’m shocked (and embarrassed) at myself for how much attention I am now giving this whole process! I remember (“back in the day”) there was a week or so where we ran to the mailbox to see if there was a big packet indicating acceptance. But this online portal, online “chance me” etc etc … it’s really captivating. (I first typed “addicting” but I’ll make it sound a little less pathological!) ACK!!

I think I’ll start a 12-step program for parents of college applicants. My name is “onemoremom12” and I’m addicted to CC. :slight_smile:

@onemoremom12

What was the t-shirt for ; has she said “yes” to Elon? Or were they for ED applicants?
I don’t think everyone has gotten t-shirts…you must be on the A-list ;).

@sunnyschool She has not committed. BUT … we did do the refundable deposit bc at the time I thought it helped with getting prioritized on housing. I have since learned that I was wrong about that. I guess we got a $500 t shirt. :slight_smile:

@onemoremom12 I will join your program!!?? Definitely addicted!! I also have a son who’s a freshman at UF, so I’ve been consumed by this for 2 years straight!! What on earth will I do with all the freed up time once she decides on a school. Oh right, I’ll join the parents fb page!!

Funny how we mom’s go straight to panic!! Not very nice of those admissions counselors to send letters out during these weeks before fellows decisions though. (I’m assuming it was the same thing we got.)

I must say I’m a bit jealous of the t-shirt. No swag has been sent our way!
