Fellow Boomers - Help me figure out "Blurred Lines"

So I know that the “song of the summer” is Blurred Lines. When I listen to it, it sounds like 4 or 5 other songs but my old brain can’t figure out which ones. Has anyone else been able to pinpoint the songs from which this very derivative song was derived?

I’ve never even heard of it. :(

Did I see this performed on Colbert? It was so unremarkable that I didn’t remember it.

Well, it makes me think of “Don’t Worry, Be Happy,” because it’s so rhythmic.

I like it a lot.

Pull out any Robert Palmer album from before when he fronted Power Station. I suggest Some People Can Do What They Want. More of an island feel but the same vibe and even the same presentation. Cross with some 70’s sounds and you’re there.

The backing vocals make the arrangement for this song.

Robert Palmer - Simply Irresistible and Addicted to Love.

Prince - Kiss

So I know that the “song of the summer” is Blurred Lines.

I thought it was Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky”. Disco updated for the 2010s, and very catchy.

I’d say Get Lucky is the song of the summer too.

I’m so glad you guys keep me posted as to what’s new. Without you, I’d be a total dork.

ETA: I wasn’t being sarcastic.

Watch the Jimmy Fallon and Roots cover with classroom instruments of Blurred Lines- not as cringe worthy as the one you hear in zumba class, at the mall, morning shows lead out music.

Marvin Gaye’s “Got to Give It Up” was the inspiration says Pharrell and Thicke

Yeah, I am hearing Marvin Gaye in there.

“Without you, I’d be a total dork”

My son went to a music fest. I looked at the line up. I hadn’t heard of any of the bands.

Yep. 10 char

The original video is excellent ;)

I think the Robert Palmer reference is spot on.

On a related note, is it possible to have a successful popular song these days that is not about sex? The two songs mentioned here aren’t that bad but the lyrics in some of the stuff I hear on the radio are really crass. And yes, I know I sound like a prude.

A lot of the recent hits on the pop charts like Blurred Lines, Get Lucky, and Take Back the Night definitely have an 80s vibe to them. When I hear them, I am definitely reminded of Prince and Michael Jackson.

The NYTimes says that Blurred Lines is highly influenced by Marvin Gaye’s Got to Give It Up.

I think it’s a great summer song, very catchy, and it’s one of my new running songs. It’s flirtatious, sure. So was Go All The Way by the Raspberries, which is the song that follows it on my running playlist. Nothing new under the sun!

I had never heard of Blurred Lines until I saw it on The Colbert Report. I knew about Get Lucky because a friend posted an old Soul Train line dance with Get Lucky dubbed in. I thought it was an old song that I had missed. I don’t listen to any pop music so I’m completely out of it unless it is introduced to me some other way.

The lyrics are disgusting.

I like the tune and it’s great to exercise to, but…lyrics are pretty awful.

Definitely promoted as song of the summer by the radio stations around here. It is catchy and has that 80’s vibe. I love the Marvin Gaye influence. I was surprised at the dancing topless models in the video.
