I googled his name to see if another article provided more details about the “anonymous tip”. That sounded ominous. The google result showed the kitchen remodel.
I was actually wondering if it was really their FAFSA submissions that exposed the problem (If they submitted FAFSA, don’t know if they did.)

I don’t get the idea of renting/buying an apt that really no one is living in, just to try to get residency. They weren’t very smart. At a minimum, they should have insisted that their DD live in that home. The minimal electricity use was the nail in the coffin.
I’m guessing that their FAFSA app is what exposed the whole thing. I don’t know if just calling a school and saying, “Hey, Susie Jones’ parent doesn’t really live in your state” would be enough."
If they were going to be dishonest, then they should have claimed that the parents were separated, one living in VA and one living in GA…with one child living with one parent, and the other child living with the other parent.
With all of this legal trouble, I imagine that at some point, they will be separated. This sort of thing breaks up families, particularly if one parent was against this whole thing from the get-go.
It amazes me how many well off people pride themselves in finding ways to game the system. How much did that kitchen remodel cost? God forbid they skip the new kitchen and pay the going rate for their baby girl to go to her “dream school.” I have no pity for folks like this who have serious entitlement issues.

Since that kitchen remodel article was in 2013, maybe some annoyed person who knew that they were scamming UGA turned them in.
The DD is now at UVA. I wonder WHY she would have chosen UGa over UVA in the first place.

You have to file FAFSA to get HOPE or Zell Miller.
“WHY” She may not have gotten into UVa initially or didn’t apply. She must have done well academically at UGa and was able to transfer. The whole thing is unfortunate that the family would go to such lengths. Their name is so unusual that this will follow these kids for a long time.

If they didn’t file FAFSA, then likely it was some annoyed acquaintance or maybe ex-BF who reported the scam.
^^^ Or one of their neighbors who saw that magazine spread and had to listen to Dad brag about how he was paying in-state rates for his daughter to go to school in GA.
HOPE only requires a B average in high school. Almost all students at UGA would qualify for that.

No, they have defined rules for high schools outside Georgia, in order to accommodate students with a Georgia resident parent.
Wow…if this family also illegally got Hope, that may be why the DA is going after them with gusto.
And that’s the way it should be. The fancy showy lifestyle, the trips, etc, may come to a screeching halt. And it’s all because the girl insisted on going to UGA (why???). Even after transferring to UVA, her mommy and daddy paid for her to do the Semester at Sea program, which is pricey!
LOL, she doesn’t seem to have a “fancy showy lifestyle” uness she is being cyber stalked! Since her family’s presence on the web is pretty open, it seems that she attended EC Glass HS in Lynchburg, was an athlete, the family travels, and they got a puppy. None of that matters, nor is it “showy”. All that matters is that her dad lied and was deceptive about his residence. This is fraud. And there should be consequences. There is no clear indication that she got the HOPE scholarship, but rather it seems she “just” got instate tuition (which is about an 18K difference per year between in/OOS, and those numbers line up with his restitution). Harder to find that semester at sea thing, but it seems she may have done that between leaving UGA and starting UVA. Don’t fault her for that either. I do fault them for bad taste in kitchen remodeling, especially the fridge.
Why she wanted to go to UGA over UVA also matters not. We always hear of students here who choose one school over another that might cause us to scratch our heads. The ONLY thing that matters is that they could well have afforded the out of state tuition and they should have paid it. Period. If they had, she’d be about to start her junior year there. IMO, this should hurt the dad more than just in the wallet. I hope they don’t quickly drop the new charges.
