Please let’s not get into the Upper Middle Class vs. Rich discussion again. The parents could obviously afford to send their child OOS but chose to lie to reduce costs.
Well, the magazine kitchen is a good reason for backlash, IMO. Median household income of about 52K won’t buy a magazine kitchen. The median income in GA is 47K, which also won’t buy a magazine kitchen. I suppose that a do-it-yourselfer might pull something off, but if I was paying taxes on my 40K in GA, I would be livid. So often on CC, people have a distorted view of how the other 99 or 78% live.
People with average incomes typically can’t afford to rent or buy a condo for the sole purpose of faking residency.
I don’t think anyone is suggesting that they have an average income. But what income do you consider to be “rich”?
I think that if they were “rich,” they wouldn’t have pulled their DD out.
@mom2collegekids She left because she was about to get kicked out. According to the UGA residency paperwork , if you provide false information about residency you will be expelled and billed retroactively for OOS tuition. I am sure it was much easier for her to transfer as an active student than as an expelled student.
Whether they are “rich” or not really doesn’t have any thing to do with the discussion. They obviously had enough money to pay for a new kitchen, pay rent, pay sorority fees, pay $37k for restitution etc,. etc.
I don’t think what particular peole call “rich” is the point. These people clearly are not struggling financially and thus are not terribly sympathetic.
I do think they would qualify as “rich” in many people’s minds, FWIW.
There is a certain past poster who used to claim to be “dirt poor” and getting significant FA, but then talked about expensive meals and hobbies, all inclusive family vacations, car purchases, significant investments with plans for early retirement, private bankers and investment counselors, etc. How much discretionary income one needs to have to be considered middle class vs rich vs the top .01% doesn’t really matter in this discussion, and seems to have an interesting perspective on cc anyway. In this case, she left probably in part because of the bad press/public embarrassment and because she’d get the boot, as deega said.

A built-in panelled fridge like the one they have starts at around 5k. Although tbh the kitchen as a whole is not one I would describe as high-end, and since they didn’t hire a good kitchen designer they’re likely saving where they can so they’re not the 1% but likely not hurting for money.

I am not saying unkind or flippant things about them (except their terrible taste in kitchen remodels , LOL) , nor wishing them ill will, as much as it might be well deserved, given my strong feeling about cheaters or liars. What I linked above is a published newspaper article, open to all. IMO Its different than reading/commenting on info posted on their personal facebook page, including what seems to be reference to mom’s page. Mom wasn’t mentioned in the newspaper articles, so that may have taken some searching. I think its fair to blast them for what is public, but alluding in a derogatory or judgmental way about things on their personal facebook page, even if some of the family members are silly enough to not make their facebook page private, to me crosses a line a bit. JMO.
Bottom line, FWIW, IMO they are fair game to be blasted for the stunt they pulled and the well deserved consequences, but the other stuff, not so much. And if the day did attend a semester at sea, good for her for continuing her education. This must have been traumatizing, though she surely knew what was going on. Shc can’t be like the piano player in a bordello claiming to not know what is going on upstairs.

The article you linked, jym talks about finding out about things even from the daughter’s Facebook (such as having gne to a Virginia high school). I am surprised that this family (with such a common last name) has not changed their privacy settings or deleted things. The daughter’s twitter account is still up as well. It is very easy to glean info about all of this from things like Facebook and Twitter.

Yes, that article (which I suspect CTTC had not read before commenting about facebook stuff ) does reference her school. I posted that, as well as the fact that they got a puppy, several days ago, to try to make a point. But to me, commenting in an observational way about what is open on their facebook page is one thing. Mocking them, or saying they have a “fancy showy lifestyle” is another, when that’s really not apparent, with the exception of that dreadful kitchen. And still haven’t found any reference on line to the semester at sea…
And so what that she wanted to go to UGA rather than UVA (where she now is)? Thats fine. They should have just PAID for it.
Well, she may have not gotten into UVa originally. And yes, her parents should have just paid for UGa. That is what has gotten them into this mess.

I still think that there is some other reason that the state is really going after these people. I sense that something else is going to come out. Usually, when people just pay back the money owed, things get either dropped or reduced to a slap on the wrist.
*typo above-- was trying to say that published news articles do give leeway to allow readers to take potshots if they wish (ridicule). To me thats different than doing so based on what may come across as snooping. But thats just me, responding to this particular situation.
I saw something about Semester at Sea somewhere as well but can’t remember where. And there are clues about college admissions in one of her public accounts. But if I say more, I don’t want to be accused of cyberstalking.

Public info is one thing, and chastizing based on that info is , IMO, fine. Commenting neutrally with factual information (not mocking ) based on personal info (eg facebook, even when it is inadvertently made public) is another. THAT is the point I was trying to make. The observation that they travelled or got a puppy, if gleaned from moms facebook page to me is fine, but differs from chiding them or passing judgment on their lifestyle based on their personal photos.
