1) Does Donner have printers? or would I have to bring my own/walk to print things I need? ( I know they essentially give you free printing, but I have an extra printer at home so just wondering)

2) Does Donner have a workout room? If it doesn’t, is it located near a facility that does?

3) I can’t find a map, so can someone tell me if Donner is far/close to the Engineering buildings? (ECE)

4) Is there food nearby? I tend to feed myself when I’m at the brink of starvation, so I rather not keel over and croak whille walking…

Trying to figure if I want to put it before or after Morewood E and these answers will help me decide.

I actually would like to know the same thing about each of the main freshman buildings (Mudge, Morewood E, Donner, Stever, etc.). So, I will add this to bump this up so hopefully more people will read it.

(1): Yes, Donner and most of the dorms that I know of have printers. In fact they are not free, you have to pay (there is no way to avoid it even if you say you’ll bring your own printer) $40 per semester for your printing quota. Each page(single side) cost 5 cents so no one really used up those quotas ever.

(2): No. Among the on-campus freshmen dorms. I know that stever has a small gym and that’s probably it (stever has very small rooms though). But there is a gym at the University Center (3 mins walk from Donner) and there is the skibo gym (5 mins walk).

(3)(4) If you are concerned about those things, Donner is the way to go!. There is the Resnik Cafe that has all kinds of food that’s just 1mins walk from Donner and of course there’s also vending machines in Donner house. And I believe that Donner is the closes Freshmen dorm to hamerschlag hall (ECE building).

Other than that, Donner has big rooms and good spirit. A nice game room with pool table and ping pang table and foosball table. And to be completely honest, there are a few downsides about living at Donner. There are 4 floors, and you are assigned to live in the first floor (it’s actually like half underground because the school is build on a hill), it could be noisy in the morning because trucks come back and forth although after like a week, no one really hears that. Other than that, I believe overall, Donner will give you the best freshmen living experience.

^ Great informative answer, thanks alot.

sigh whenever threads like this pop up, I keep switching the order of my housing.

Found a Map: http://www.cmu.edu/homeimages/campus-map/CMU_MapColor_11x17.jpg

Morewood is top, Donner bottom left. Looks like proximity to ECE building is won by Donner. But UC seems same distance from both. Ehhhhhhhhh…I’m so indecisive.

I think the best question to ask is what are the biggest contrasts between the two dorms. If anyone can answer that, I’ll maybe satisfy my greed to eb dormed in every building lol -_-

Mudge and Morewood also have gyms and their own printing clusters. (Mudge’s is new as of this year.)

Donner has a close freshman community, but Morewood has the upperclassmen benefit (you mesh with people from classes above you.) Morewood also IMO has nicer rooms than Donner, but Donner’s rooms are bigger. Donner is closer to better food, but Morewood has way better lounges and public areas and the Underground is in the actual building - so no need to get dressed.

Donner has the noise from Maggie Mo street, but Morewood has Midway noise when Carnival comes around. It’s really just a give and take. All freshman dorms are more or less equal.

This is very informative, but I am still indecisive.

^ And you will be until the 31st when you can’t change your mind lol. I’m just leaving my housing preferences as they are.

I think I’m going to keep my preferences the same too.

garage12’s post has a ton of misinformation that i’ll correct:

1 - printing. it’s 5 cents per SHEET, and the printer automatically prints double-sided for you. so each sheet of paper (double-sided) that you print costs 5 cents from your printing quota. if you have extra money left in your printing quota, you will not be reimbursed. the quota resets each semester.
2 - stever does NOT have a small gym. morewood and mudge do have some small exercise facilities, but i believe those are the only freshman dorms that do. if you’re in donner and you want to exercise, the SKIBO GYM is closer to donner than the UC facilities are. there is also exercise equipment available in RESNIK, which is pretty much right next to donner.

^
Stever does have a small gym room on the ground floor.
If you still dont believe me, please go check.
