few questions about scholarship money

hey my girlfriend is about to attend universal technical institute.
shes applying for all of these scholarships and we had a few questions on if she wins them.

UTI only costs about 30k and lets say she wins like 60k in scholarships. what happens to the money that she does not use for her tuition? does she get to keep it or how does that work. and can she use that money to help pay for living expences?

thanks for answering.

She would need to contact the school and the givers of the scholarships. It would all depend.

It’s 30k for one year, not for all four years. So she may have to contact the scholarship itself and them if they would defer the payment until her second year of school.

That way the money doesn’t go to waste.

I would not worry too much about it - the likelihood of winning $60k in scholarships is fairly slim.

If she does it would depend on the rules of the scholarships so she would have to check those. Some may be payable directly to the school, some may be specifically for tuition etc. Also any scholarships that are over the amount of tuition and fees are taxable so make sure she puts aside money for the taxes.

Also if she is recieving any sort of need based financial aid she is required to report any outside scholarships to the school.
