do you get fewer class choices if you don’t go to summer orientation?

is it normal that for a biochem major, the classes required for the major sum up to like 120 unit credits? then you have to fill the rest, 60 units, with a minor or elective ?

No, I don’t think so. The time that you are able to pick classes is put on GOLD. I don’t know if you can log in yet, but if you can, your first “pass time” (range of times/dates you can choose classes) should be under the “Registration Info” tab. After you select “Fall 2009,” you should see the date and time you are able to choose your first class under “Registration Dates for Fall 2009.” Under your first pass, you can sign up for 12 units (usually three classes), and under your second pass you can sign up for more (usually your fourth class).

So what I’m saying is that the date and time listed there shouldn’t be different whether you go to orientation or not, but I don’t know for sure (because I went to orientation).

Yes. I used to be impressed by all those people who double-majored in this, that, and the other thing until I found out that a single major, even in addition to all the units you’ll get from fulfilling general education requirements, doesn’t add up to enough units to get a degree. For example, the business economics major (including pre-major courses) only adds up to 70-something quarter units or something like that.

I suppose you could just take a bunch of random courses to fill up the rest of your degree requirements, but having a minor (~30 units, from the ones I’ve seen) or a second major helps add some structure to that.

however, if you’re a incoming student, your “pass time” is the same for everyone in the orientation that you signed up for. so you probably wont be able to sign up for classes unless you sign up for an orientation.
