Does anyone know if I am at a disadvantage? I’m an FGLI student because nobody from either side of my parents’ families has even finished high school, and my family’s income is below 70k. However, I go to quite a rich school in the northeast, and my classmates tend to come from families with incomes above 150k. Am I held to the same expectations as them?
Yes and no. You have had academic opportunities, so your transcript will be viewed in the context of what your high school offers.
And you will be in a pool of FGLI students.
Overall, colleges have found that FGLI students coming from high-achieving high schools are more likely to succeed than their counterparts coming from under-resourced schools. If you’re interested in this, you might enjoy “Privileged Poor”, a book about FGLI students who have had the privilege of attending good BS/prep schools.
You can use your essays to talk about this. You can also look into organizations like Questbridge, etc. Those are things your “rich” classmates can’t do.
