Fiancee's Aid

My fiancee recently graduated with a bachelors in history. She is interested in going back to college for a bachelors in biology which has more job opportunities and is more in line with her interests.

She will be turning 24 this year so she is now an independent. Her GPA is approximately a 3.0.

Will her having already attained a bachelors degree limit her eligibility for financial aid? Would getting married before applying aid her chances? If so would I need to report the amount of financial aid I have received?

We are both independent and living together. She works part time with a yearly income of approximately $9000 and has a unsubsidized Stafford loan of $5,000. I currently am a full-time student and received approx. $20,000 in financial aid and $5,000 in subsidized Stafford loans for my Junior year.

When students are planning to get married, one of questions that come up is the timing if financial aid is an issue. You need to work out the numbers and see if marriage would put the quash on your aid. You need to fill out the forms both as married and not before as trial runs (online calculators are available). It depends on the circumstance how you will fare. Basically once you are married, you are both independent but you each have to include each others incomes and assets on the forms. Yes having attained a BA does limit eligibility for aid.
