Field Hockey Summer Camp suggestions needed

I’m looking for suggestions for a summer camp for my DS - a soon to be HS freshman. She wants to attend a field hockey camp but is only interested in being a goalie. So we’re looking for something that will give her the opportunity to increase her goalie skills. When she moves into HS in the fall, and we have 3-4 (?) MS that feed into her HS. If she’s to make the team, she needs to step up her game a bit. Although, why she likes it when people hit very hard balls at her, is beyond me.

We live on the east coast, so something in the area of VA, MD, NC, DE, PA, NY, MA is doable.

If anyone has any experince or can recommend a camp, I would appreciate it.

I think just about all the schools with field hockey teams have summer camps. My D has done one at Northwestern and one at Michigan State. I don’t know that one much better than another. They usually offer one team camp and one individual camp. I’d pick a school your D might consider attending and see if the dates work for her.

The girls at our high school, who were really serious players, joined this “futures” program:

Here is the link for US Field Hockey Partner Camps. Most have GK sessions.

My suggestions - talk to the varsity coach. Talk to the current goal keepers. Sometimes varsity teams attend camp. Not all camps are good. My daughter’s had good experiences and bad one. They get very expensive and paying $500 for a bad week is awful.

If there is a college she is interested in and they have a camp - send her there.
Look for a summer league. Again talk to the coach about this. Girls really benefit from playing continually and getting real experience.

As far as her liking to get pummeled by very hard balls - I can’t help you with that one! ;)

Summer leagues are a great experience too, we also had great luck with the Nike Field Hockey Camps - last year it was at Lock Haven College in PA but this year I think it is at different locations - it was only Sunday-Wednesday but they played ALL day, LOL. I’ve also heard of one at UNC that is good. There is a summer league in the Northern Virginia area and also there are indoor opportunities. She also may want to try out for any of the travel teams in your area or at least talk to the coaches.

Just after I spoke I realized I just got a brochure in the mail from Lock Haven about a camp they run -if it is anything like the one they had last year it was a great experience. Dorms aren’t great, the caampus has some big hills but my D said the food was great (and she’s a vegan so she was expecting to survive on salad and pb&j) and while it wasn’t a school she was interested it got her thinking of things she did/didn’t want on a campus.
