"When Fife High School senior Tierney Kuhn scored a perfect 2,400 on her SAT at the start of this school year, her achievement was the buzz among amazed students and staff. Now they are talking about another of Kuhn’s academic accomplishments, one that fulfills her dream of going to an Ivy League institution of higher learning: she has been accepted into Princeton University, and with a very generous financial aid package.

The affable young scholar said she was surprised beyond words when she received the good news. “I just kind of shut down for five seconds,” she said. “I couldn’t think anything.” Having applied to four other universities – Stanford, MIT, Columbia and Yale – Kuhn said she was hoping for any of them to accept her, as they all offer top-notch programs in the field of computer science she plans to pursue.

Even more good news could come Kuhn’s way next month. A National Merit Scholarship finalist, Kuhn will learn in March whether she will be one of the fortunate students to secure the prestigious award.

She has also been named one of more than 3,000 candidates in the 2009 Presidential Scholars Program, one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors. The U.S. Department of Education will announce the scholars in May, and if Kuhn is one of them she will receive an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the national recognition ceremony.
Congratulations, Tierney!

Congrats Tierney!

…but if anybody out there is reading, I do suggest applying to a greater variety of schools. Safeties/Matches/Reaches. You need all of them! Sometimes it can work out, but you really don’t want to risk it, do you?
