Fighting against discrimination

My school had special restriction on international students to join the National Honor Society. When I realized that I could not join the NHS because of my citizenship, I talked with the principal and NHS director and asked the restriction to be abolished. The state law prohibits discrimination based on national origin, which includes limiting students’ right to be involved in school funded organizations with regard to one’s citizenship. It sounds really simple but it was not an easy fight. I did finally get in and the school has a new policy that applies to evey student regardless of citizenship. Would it be a bad idea to mention this in the application essay? This part will only be about 4-5 lines and won’t be very significant part of the essay.

Mention it with caution (you don’t want to come across as a liability, but you did put in effort for equality).

I started with saying, “Last year, I fought for the abolition of restriction on international students from joining the National Honor Society, which I believed was unjust.” Then I wrote that I talked to the school officials to change the policy. I also mentioned in the end of the paragraph that I am proud that people in the future with this issue because of my work.

I think that the topic, and especially how you presented it, is an excellent thing to mention. It shows that you are a true leader and trailblazer, and act on your morals. The adcom will definitely, definitely want to see that!

I would mention it and emphasize that when you saw injustice, you went through the proper channels to correct it. Colleges will more than welcome that approach.
