I have tried searching and am not coming up with the answer so I thought I would post and see if anyone can help me. This is the first year my DD had a paying job and paid taxes. My question is do I add her income to our income when completing our tax return? She still qualifies as a dependent. Or does she file a separate tax form, she only made about $2300 this past summer and paid some taxes. If she files separately can we still claim her as a dependent. I can’t find a concise answer. TIA
This is a good explanation:
She is not required to file a return if that’s the only income she had but she will want to to get back the Federal and maybe State income taxes that were withheld. She can file online for free on turbo tax. She will not claim herself on her own return. You can still claim her as a dependent on your return.
You do not put her income on your tax return.
She should file her own return to get back any income tax paid. The standard deduction for a single person is $6200 for 2014. There are several free file software links on the IRS website.
You can still claim her as a dependent.
