Film Critics

What do you study to become a film critic? And is it a hard field to get in to? Any good schools?

I don’t think that there is any program in the field at any college, but I could be wrong. This is more a profession, not an area of study.

Some areas that relate are: film school (NYU, USC), literary, philosophy, journalism

You will do well to learn to be a good critical writer. You will be well served by going to any liberal arts college. Or a U that has a good journalism school, like Northwesten.

most were probably lit majors

USC has a critical studies program in their film school. Film critics as well as scholars, archivists, directors, and the like come out of this program. Many colleges have majors in film or cinema studies that provide an education in the history of filmmaking and training in critical analysis, which would serve you well if you want to be a critic.
