Hello!
So as you can see I’m interested in the film industry. It’s been very hard trying to figure out the path I’m going to take. I notice from reading online of directors, producers, screenwriters, cinematographers, etc. have gotten into the industry without a degree in film. On the other hand, I know of many others that have used film school and have been successful as well. I’m really just thinking about how I’m going to work through this, as I really want to break in the industry, like many other prospective film people.
My mom’s been supportive of me entering the field & always encourages me to just do something I want, as long as I can support myself. My dad, on the other hand, wants be to become an engineer, accountant, health professional, etc., and I know it’s because it’s science & it’s “useful” & I have nothing against people in the field, but I know his goal is that he wants me to have a job that makes $90,000 as a starting salary, which really doesn’t happen that much anymore unless you go to Med school. And I think he really just wants me to go into science in general.
So, I’ve applied to 11 schools. UIC, UIUC, Loyola Chicago, San Diego State, UC San Diego, ISU (Illinois state), DePaul, Loyola Marymount (first choice), UCLA, Chapman, & USC. The last 5 I applied for film. I really like Loyola Marymount for location, film school, internships, opportunities, and I visited the campus the past summer. I don’t know if we can pay for it though; it’s extremely expensive at around $61,000 a year, which is a load to cover, and from what I’ve heard they throw out a lot of loans. I guess I’m really asking should I go to another school in-state like Loyola Chicago or UIC and major in something like marketing with a minor in film or accounting so that way I can pay for my education, secure a job, & pursue film later? Or what are your thoughts on this?
Thank you!
