Film school: LMU vs CSUN

I have been accepted to the undergrad film program for Loyola Marymount University and CSU Northridge under the screenwriting major. LMU has given me a handsome scholarship bringing down the cost to $41K, while CSUN is $24K. I/My family can afford LMU, but $41K is “risky.” Anyone have any info on Northridge’s film program and LMU’s Program? Would really help with making a decision.

I don’t understand what you mean by 41k is risky?

Both schools are top notch in Film Production.
While I would almost always encourage a student to select the school with the lesser cost, there are a few things to consider with these two.

The $41k per year is very expensive and truly a risk for a burgeoning filmmaker. Any debt will impact your ability to take internship or lower-paying job as you’re starting out, as you’ll need to service the debt. Check out the teaching faculty and their backgrounds in the departmental pages. Are these the people who will give you the skills - and industry introductions that you’ll need?

The main consideration at CSUN, is that you will be a Film Provisional student until you are accepted by Film Portfolio process. A potential film students must successfully complete all lower division requirements, with a B- or better, and submit a Film Production Portfolio Review Application.
It’s unclear how many students are approved each year and what the acceptance criteria is for a successful portfolio. This would give me pause.

I would send an email to someone in the department and find that out.
If it’s an 85 percent conversion rate, then no problem.
If it’s only 75 percent or lower, then it could be an issue.

Reputation-wise, CSUN is tops for ‘below-the-line’ entry level jobs and is a consistent feeder to the film/tv industry.

Both schools are good and will give you what you need.
It’s up to you to decide what you want and at what cost.

LMU has attentive administration, plus beautiful residential campus
with cooperative, engaged students.
CSUN is primarily a commuter in a San Fernando Valley suburb.

Good luck

i wouldn’t incur any debt to go to LMU (or any private really) - no matter how pretty the campus is.

Northridge is a good school with a solid reputation. Yes, there are some compromises in student experience but, graduating debt free is a much better call.
